SUBJECT: MISSION PLAZA STEPS REPLACEMENT PROJECT SPEC. NO. 90685
CAO RECOMMENDATION
Appropriate $45,000 from Public Works carry over funding for replacement of the Mission Plaza
Steps and transfer it to the project account.
DISCUSSION
The Mission Plaza steps, located below the amphitheater, were built'in 1971., (Attachment 1)
Over thirty years of public use have deteriorated the steps and many temporary repairs have
proven to be an ineffective long term solution. The current brick path has displaced creating an
uneven walking surface and the concrete steps are broken and worn exposing the reinforcing bar.
Because of the failing steps, the ground underneath the steps has begun to erode, removing
support. The walkway's handrail has become unstable due to dry rot. (Attachment 2).
This project will replace the most damaged section of steps and railing in the Mission Plaza.
Staff will request additional funding for the other locations as part of the 2007-09 Budget
process.
CONCURRENCES
This project has been given a Categorical Exemption .from the Community Development
Department.
FISCAL IMPACT
This is an unanticipated project, and as such was not funded in the 2005-07 Financial Plan.. The
following summarizes project costs:
Project Costs
Construction 40,000
Contingencies @ 10% 4,000
Materials Testing/Soils Reports 1,000
Total $459000
Mission Plaza Steps Replacement Page 2
Public Works identified funding for a step repair project in the Parks Maintenance operating
budget. When the increase in scope was identified, the larger project was included on the
Department's carry over funding list, which hasa balance of$45,000 to support this request.
ALTERNATIVES
The City Council could postpone this work for a later time in which the entire walkway could be
reconstructed. This is not recommended as the steps will soon have to be closed to the public if
repairs are not made.
