SUBJECT: BUS STOP IMPROVEMENT PROJECT SPEC. NO. 99001
CAO RECOMMENDATION
1. Approve plans and specifications for the "Bus Stop Improvement Project Spec. No. 99001".
2. Authorize staff to advertise for bids and authorize the CAO to award the contract if the
lowest responsible bid is within the engineer's estimate of$125,000.
DISCUSSION
In FY 2004-05 the City received a Federal Transit Administration grant in the amount of $118,400
to improve bus stop locations within the City. The grant requires a 20% match ($29,600) which was
budgeted in the City's FY 2004-05 Federal Program of Projects as adopted by Council on
November 16, 2004. The project has now been designed and is ready for bid and construction.
The project will update approximately fifty (50) bus stop locations by removing old bus benches
and installing the new metal benches identified in the Short Range Transit Plan (2003). The project
will also remove many of the old '7' post bus stops outside the Downtown area and install safer
break-away sign posts that will highlight the bus stop locations. Finally, a minimum of one bus
shelter will be installed at the intersection of Foothill/Casa bus tum out where the old shelter was
removed as part of the Foothill Bridge closure.
The City will purchase and supply to the contractor all transit signs that will be used as part of the
project. Because this is a grant funded project, if bids come in lower than engineers estimate, staff
will work with the lowest responsible bidder to implement additional improvements at the bus
stops to fully utilize all available federal funds.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no General Fund allocation required for this project. The $29,600 required for local
match will come from the City's Transportation Development Act funding which was
programmed for this in FY 2004-05.
