FROM: Audrey Hooper, City C1erkG4
Prepared by: Elaina Cano, Deputy City Clerk
SUBJECT: VICE MAYOR APPOINTMENT' FOR 2008
CAO RECOMMENDATION:
Appoint Council Member Paul Brown as Vice Mayor to serve a one-year term commencing upon
appointment.
DISCUSSION
Section 408 of the City's Charter requires that the Council elect one of its members to be the Vice
Mayor.
Section 3.2 of the Council Policies and Procedures provides that the appointment of the Vice
Mayor shall be for a one-year term, that the appointment be made on a rotational basis, and that
the appointment go to the next senior member.
Following current Council policy of rotating the Vice Mayor position, and consistent with
Council practice over the past six years, Council Member Brown is next in line for the
opportunity to serve as Vice Mayor. Vice Mayor appointments over the last six years are:
Council Member Marx - 2002
Council Member Mulholland - 2003
Council Member Schwartz - 2004
Council Member Ewan - 2005
Council Member Settle - 2006
Council Member Mulholland - 2007
Looking to the future, the rotation dictates that Council Member Settle would serve in 2009 and
Council Member Carter in 2010. This practice ensures that each Council Member will serve one
year of his/her four-year term in the capacity of Vice Mayor.
