This came as somewhat of a surprise to me as this basketball hoop or its predecessor has been in the same location for nearly seven years. I have been warned that unless this hoop is removed from the sidewalk, the City will take steps to have it removed. I assume that similar notices went out to the dozens of homeowners who maintain basketball hoops in my neighborhood. While I understand the City's position with respect to the enforcement of City ordinances, I believe that in this case it may be misguided. I have lived in the City for the past seven years. I have maintained my business within the City since 1989 and am a member of the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce. One of the reasons I chose to move to San Luis Obispo was that it was family oriented. My two oldest daughters attended Los Ranchos Elementary School, Laguna Middle School and SLO High School. My youngest daughter currently attends Old Mission School and will attend Mission Prep this fall. She is currently a member(starting point guard)of the girls' eighth grade basketball team. When she's not practicing two hours after school everyday with her team, she can be found out front shooting free throws on her hoop in front of our house until it is dark. It would seem that the City would want to promote this type of lifestyle. Too often, children, particularly teens, retreat to their rooms for hours on end playing video games and never seeing the light of day. Sadly, with the City's current position, it gives us few options. Certainly, we can go to one of the two City-maintained parks in my neighborhood, but given work and homework schedules, this is not always a viable option. 1 I would urge the City to reconsider its position. Perhaps there is a middle ground which can be reached to the satisfaction of both sides. I understand that this matter will be on the Council's agenda on March 18th- I would welcome the opportunity to address the Council at that time. Thank you for your consideration. A Greg Coates
