I have also had e-mails and phone calls, and there have been letters in the Tribune. The issue is the huge waste of energy when doors are open and the heating or air conditioning is on. The Council asked the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Association to help address this issue with business owners. It appears that there is more problem with corporately owned businesses. When the Integrated Waste Management Authority organized the take-back program for household hazardous waste, the retailers who refused to participate were Target, Home Depot and Walmart. So the IWMA passed an ordinance, and now they have to comply. San Luis Obispo has signed on to ICLEI, is preparing its greenhouse gas inventory in preparation for writing a reduction plan, and will require the help of everyone to meet the goals of AB 32 and beyond. I suggest that the Council direct staff to bring forward an ordinance that would prohibit businesses from having doors open when either the heat or air conditioning is on. Thank you for your consideration. /cl flAl Cc: Ken Hampian 1 COCUNCIL ?FIN DIIRR Jonathan Lowell ACAO Ir FIRE CHIEF John Mandeville 9 ATTORNEY PW DIR P CLERK/ORIG POLICE CHF John MOSS El DEPT HEADS IREC DIR Kim Murry /A ?- UTIL DIR Ron Munds iii HR DIR yc C4 O C tZA, Communication-Energy Reduction
