DISCUSSION Background On May 19, 2009, the City Council approved the submittal of the 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant for$70,200 to purchase 39 sets of Personal Protective Equipment for structural firefighting. In January 2010 the department was notified that it received a grant for $61,776 for 39 sets of Personal Protective Equipment. The grant award was lower than the request; therefore several cost cutting specifications will be included in the bid. The Personal Protective Equipment will meet current regulations and standards and stay within budget. Grant Terms The grant requires a 10% cash match of the total project cost ($6,864). Procurement transactions must be conducted in a manner to provide, to the maximum extent practical, open and free competition. The grant funds must be expended by January 21, 2011. FISCAL IMPACT The Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program requires a cash match equal to 10% of the total project cost which amounts to $6,864. The matching funds will be covered by the existing Fire Department budget. There will be no additional cost to the General Fund. ALTERNATIVE The Council could reject the grant. This is not recommended as the grant provides outside funding for needed Personal Protective Equipment for structural firefighting.
