Public Works Director City Engineer''—,-' Engineering Assistant/Traffic
SUBJECT:
Submittal of Plans and Specifications for the Traffic Signal Upgrade:
Foothill & California, Foothill & Tassajara, Johnson & Bishop - City Plan
Nos. M-18C and N-11C.
CAO RECOMMENDATION:
By Motion Approve Plans and Specifications and Authorize Staff to Advertise
for Bids.
DISCUSSION:
Some of the City's traffic signal installations are operating with outdated
equipment and do not meet current design standards. Engineering is planning a
systematic upgrading of all outdated installations. The three intersections
included in this project were all installed in 1969 and spare parts for these
three controllers are no longer available. For this reason they were
prioritized in the CRP for control'.er replacement in advance of other
installations. As part of this project new controllers are to be installed at
all locations to prevent an irrepairable controller failure. In addition,
these new controllers provide fc^ greater versatility of operation.
At the some time the controller ure replaced, the signal lights will be
brought up to current standaris cnd new detection will be added to allow for
better response to changing traffic patterns.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
The project has received a notice of exemption from the Planning Department.
SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS:
Engineer's Estimate: $126, 000.00
Contingencies: 13,000.00
Total: $139,000.00
These projects are included in the amount of $124,000.00 in the 1987-89 Capital
Improvement Program, Capital Reinvestment, under Streets/Traffic Signal
Improvements. Some additional funds may need to be budgeted to cover all
costs.
