FROM: Parks and Recreation - Stockton Prepared by: Fitzgerald
SUBJECT: Replacement of Softball Field Lighting at Santa Rosa Park
CAO RECOMMENDATION:
Approve Plans and Specifications for Replacement of Softball
Field Lighting at Santa Rosa Park and Authorize Staff to
Advertise for Construction Bids.
BACKGROUND:
The softball field lighting system at Santa Rosa Park was installed in
1949,. and has been in constant use during the ensuing 40 years. The wooden
poles, with an estimated life span of 15 years, have after 40 years finally
yielded to the ravages of time and weather and have been determined unsafe to
climb for necessary maintenance of light fixtures. Additionally, the existing
light fixtures are very energy inefficient considering today's standards and
the necessity to obtain a high-lift truck to maintain the fixtures is not cost
effective.
The plans under consideration to retrofit this lighting system have
considered the shortcomings of the existing system and recommend the use of
equipment that will result in a maintenance and operations cost savings to the
City.
In that 1989 softball is fast approaching and we anticipate at least 2000
persons to participate this season, Staff recommends installation of this
lighting system at the same time the Santa Rosa Park irrigation system is being
upgraded to insure the very minimum of park closure time.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Approve plans and specifications for replacement of softball
lighting system at Santa Rosa Park and authorize staff to
advertise for construction bids.
2. Do not approve plans or authorize bidding procedures at this
time.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve plans and specifications for replacement of softball lights
at Santa Rosa Park and authorize staff to advertise for bids.

This project is included in the current CIP and is partially subsidized by
State Park Bond Act monies. Consultant's estimate is
$80,000. Funds earmarked for this project include $62,000 CIP and
$20,000 State Bond Act.
Plans are available for review in Council Reading Room. (//
