CAO RECOMMENDATION: Approve Plans and Specifications for Mission Plaza Amphitheater Improvements, City Plan No. M-04Y; Authorize staff to advertise for bids and- authorize the CAO to award a contract within the Engineer's Estimate. BACKGROUND: This project was approved in the FY 1987-89 Financial Plan at an estimated cost of $55 ,000. During the February 9 , 1988 review of CIP projects, the Council reviewed the site and a preliminary -sketch for improvements to the Amphitheater in Mission Plaza. The project is of special interest because of its location in the Mission Plaza. The main concern expressed at that time was that the improvements should be as inobtrusive as possible. Landplans Plus was selected from four landscape architecture firms that submitted proposals on this project. The architect was commissioned to propose a low impact amphitheater that would be functional and would minimize maintenance. Fran Dukehart has been a prime mover in generating interest and support for the project. She, through an Ad Hoc Organization named Friends of the Mission Plaza Amphitheater, has contacted community service clubs and user groups. An enthusiastic response for these improvements has been given by these groups. Concurrences The Parks and Recreation Commission supported this project. Architectural Review Commission approval was granted on August 1 , 1988. The downtown San Luis Obispo Business Improvement Association voted to support the project. n►►►I►IIIIp glUlll MY of san LUIS OBISPO A COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT Mission Plaza Amphitheater Page 2 Fiscal Impact Engineer's Estimate 55,000 Contingencies 5,000 TOTAL 60,000 The project was approved in the FY 1987-89 Capital Reinvestment Plan at an estimated cost of $55,000. Mayor and Members of the City Council , At it's last meeting, the BIA-Board of Directors voted unanimously to support plans for the improvement of the Amphetheater area of . Mission Plaza. The board acted upon the recommendation, made earlier, of its beautification sub-committee after it had reviewed the plans in detail. It is the belief of all of us on the Beautification Committee p and the BIA Board that the modest improvements being proposed will contribute positively to the cultural and artistic life of the Plaza as well as provide an opportunity for civic groups to combine their resources•with those of the city to accomplish a worthwhile goal.
