PERSONNEL DIRECTOR
SUBJECT: SUGGESTED CITY ATTORNEY INTERVIEW SCHEDULE
We have worked with Kay Jimno of Ralph Anderson and have assisted her in developing
a schedule for City Attorney interviews and contiguous activities which is attached
for your review. This format is modeled after the approach the City has taken in
other executive recruitments and has been well-received by both interviewees and
interviewers. I recognize it represents a substantial time commitment and reflects
the high priority you place on this extremely important selection process.
We have provided a number of opportunities for you to get to know the candidates in
settings beyond the traditional interview session, although the major part of
Friday will be devoted to the interviews. The Management Team has been invited to
attend some of the activities. This is to enable you to assess how well the
candidates relate to the team that they will eventually be working with. It is
important that "organizational fit" be one of the areas evaluated. Additionally,
candidates will be given the opportunity to meet with members of the management
team after their interviews with the Council to exchange information about their
working styles, expectations and any other areas of concern. At the conclusion of
these informational sessions, the management team would share with you its
observations, providing you with input from an organizational perspective.
I realize how difficult it has been to find a time that synchronizes with
everyone's busy summer schedules but I am confident that at the end of this process
you will be satisfied that you have had ample access to the candidates and are
thoroughly familiar with them. This will allow you to make the best possible
decision.
Should you have any questions regarding this process, please feel free to call.
Thank you.

MEMORANDUM
To: City council
J/
From: Pam g and John Dunn
Subject: Council interviews with City Attorney candidates
on June 27 the City Council met with Kay Jimno of Ralph Andersen and
established the dates of July 20, 21 and 22 as the interview process
dates. It subsequently turned out that all Councilmembers are not
available for those dates, nor for the alternative dates of August 3, 4
and S.
we believe that, for normal City business, it is not necessary to have all
five City Councilmembers present; we also believe that, for extraordinary
City business, and the interview/selection of Council appointed officials
falls in that category, it is necessary to have all five Councilmembers
present.
You may wish to consider, at your meeting on either July 12 or July 18,
the selection of other dates when all of you would be present for this
most important process. The critical factor is a timely response so that
we retain the qualified finalist candidates.
