I may not be able to attend the workshops as I am intently working on a monograph to b e published in Sardinia this Spring . My requests are as follows : 1 Strengthen the Design Guidelines for the Historic Old Downtown area so that new constructio n built contiguous with that area and within the given area cannot build modern architecture but woul d use Contextual Design . [The City could invite a known architect designing Contextual Design to giv e a lecture so that Council, Staff and Citizens understand this type of design . Also build in statement s that require the City Staff to follow those determined rules .] t 2 The City should hire an architect who has majored in Design and Historic Preservation . It is not enough to have only City Planners on Staff as many of the decisions that come to the City ar e aesthetically oriented and Planners are not educated nor strong in this area . Therefore, a person wh o has a Design education is needed on Staff . 3 Trees within neighborhoods should be of various types, not one type per street . I think this would look strange and besides, if one type becomes ill then the street that has that type could end up not having any trees left . A mixture of fine street trees is preferable . 4 Please find a way to not accept anymore alcohol establishments in the downtown . We have only a few shops that draw people to downtown and the many bars and restaurants are now infringing o n the purpose of a downtown . Citizens of SLO that i have spoken with simply don't go downtown a s there is nothing there to interest them and the plethora of drinking establishments are a negativ e determinant . I support the request of the RON group and ask that you make 'Neighborhood Wellness' a Major City Goal for the nex t two years . Please include the Downtown area as one of the neighborhoods . 1.That Neighborhood Wellness be retained as a Major City Goal, and 2.That staff time in several City departments be dedicated to projects aimed at ensuring the protection and maintenanc e of our residential neighborhoods as was indicated in Measure Y, wit h a.Emphasis on neighborhood infrastructure maintenance , b.Stricter enforcement of Noise and Unruly Gathering Ordinances, an d c.Continued emphasis on reduction of blight conditions and higher level code violations in our residentia l neighborhood s Thank you for your consideration of these suggestions and good luck in making your selections and in enhancing them over the next two years .
