HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/12/1989, A - DOWNTOWN BEAUTIFICATION AWARDS / October 24, 1989 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DOWNTOWN SAN LU15 OBISPO BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION DOWNTOWN BEAUTIFICATION AWARDS In November, the Downtown Business Improvement Association, will inaugurate the first Downtown Beautification Awards program. Any business or building within the BIA district (Santa Rosa to 528 Higuera/Marsh, and Palm to Pacific) is eligible. The BIA Beautification Committee, in conjunction with Mayor Ron Dunin, developed the concept for the awards in the fall of 1988. The first series of awards is designed to honor new construction (completed within the past two years) and those businesses that have made improvements to their facilities over the past year. Future awards will be made annually. The criteria established by the committee include five categories, Best New Construction (within 24 months) , Best Remodel (within 12 months) , Best Public Project (within 12 months) , Best Maintenance, and Best Merchandising. Plaques will be awarded for each category, with the Mayor ' s Trophy given to the project deemed the best overall. A panel of five judges has been selected. They are Brad Bilsten, co-owner of B. Anthony Jewelers and Gold Concept; Myron Graham, former downtown businessman; Mike Multari,. Studio Design Group; Marshall Ochylski of LandPlans; and Councilwoman Peg Pinard. November 29 is the date set .for judging, with final selections announced December 4. The awards will be made in the Council Chambers at the beginning of the December 5 City Council meeting. The (more) announcement is timed so that winning businesses may note their award in holiday advertising. Anyone (individual, business or group) may nominate candidates for these awards. Nominations should be in writing and should state which buildings or businesses are nominated for which awards. More than one nomination for an award is acceptable. Nominations may be mailed to the Downtown BIA, P. O. Box 1402, San Luis Obispo, CA 93406, or may be dropped off at the BIA office at 1108 Garden Street. Deadline is November 17.
