In November, the Downtown Business Improvement Association,
will inaugurate the first Downtown Beautification Awards
program. Any business or building within the BIA district
(Santa Rosa to 528 Higuera/Marsh, and Palm to Pacific) is
eligible.
The BIA Beautification Committee, in conjunction with Mayor
Ron Dunin, developed the concept for the awards in the fall
of 1988. The first series of awards is designed to honor
new construction (completed within the past two years) and
those businesses that have made improvements to their
facilities over the past year. Future awards will be made
annually.
The criteria established by the committee include five
categories, Best New Construction (within 24 months) , Best
Remodel (within 12 months) , Best Public Project (within 12
months) , Best Maintenance, and Best Merchandising. Plaques
will be awarded for each category, with the Mayor ' s Trophy
given to the project deemed the best overall.
A panel of five judges has been selected. They are Brad
Bilsten, co-owner of B. Anthony Jewelers and Gold Concept;
Myron Graham, former downtown businessman; Mike Multari,.
Studio Design Group; Marshall Ochylski of LandPlans;
and Councilwoman Peg Pinard. November 29 is the date set
.for judging, with final selections announced December 4.
The awards will be made in the Council Chambers at the
beginning of the December 5 City Council meeting. The
(more)
announcement is timed so that winning businesses may note
their award in holiday advertising.
Anyone (individual, business or group) may nominate
candidates for these awards. Nominations should be in
writing and should state which buildings or businesses are
nominated for which awards. More than one nomination for an
award is acceptable. Nominations may be mailed to the
Downtown BIA, P. O. Box 1402, San Luis Obispo, CA 93406, or
may be dropped off at the BIA office at 1108 Garden Street.
Deadline is November 17. For more information call the BIA
