Thanks ! arding : Homelessness Worksho p urday, January 12, 2013 Dear Mayor and fellow Council Members : e City's community forum on City goals held on Tuesday January 8, 2013 we were introduced to two major point s presented by Chamber of Commerce representatives . We would now like to question these two statements . Havin g frequented the Mission Plaza area daily and often up to four times a day we reject the idea that the condition of th e Plaza area is "blighted". In its present form, the area is a good background for the variety of activities scheduled there al l year round . Additional expenditures by the City are unnecessary . Any changes to the area on the southeast side of th e Creek should be the responsibility of the individual property owners and in accordance with a newly developed Cree k specific plan . The concern for the homeless also seems unwarranted . These people are not intimidating . We would suggest that a portion of the Plaza area be used to accommodate the homeless . This concept could apply as well to the so-called par k that is located near the corner of South Higuera and Pacific Streets . Elements that are welcoming to the homeless, suc h as signs, could be integrated into these locations . An informal survey of the homeless would also shed more light o n what qualities would be attractive to them . This would be a better and more appropriate investment than providin g overall lighting to Mission Plaza and the creekwalk . Hopefully, we would then stop seeing the homeless as a scourge i n our midst . Respectfully Submitted , • David Brodi e 873 Chorro Street S .L .O . 2
