They also said, "we believe i t would be a shame to abandon the project now and start over at a new location ." First, let me say that I am one of those business owners who opposes building this at the current location, but n o i one (that I know of) has ever said "abandon the project and start over" as The Tribune has stated . I do however , strongly suggest MOVING this building to a location that would better serve all involved including the potentia l 200 homeless residents, staff, administration, neighboring businesses, and the existing residents at the mobil e *tome park that would be affected by the impact of this huge project . While most of us would like to see the unfortunate WORTHY homeless community helped, we also recogniz e that a large portion of that community has mental health and/or substance abuse issues that could threaten th e safety and well-being of employees and customers (many of the latter are children). It has been proven tha t about 60% of the homeless come here from outside of San Luis Obispo County . The current plan may loo k good on paper to some, but the impact of bringing 200 of these folks and their vehicles into our busines s district, and so near to the mobile home park, will undoubtedly summon many police calls and complaints (du e to public disturbances, theft, vandalism, litter, loitering, etc). The Homeless Center staff, administration, an d police would have to deal with that . The rest of us would have to put up with it and hopefully survive the negative effects it would bring . When the 200 beds fill up, where will the rest of them go? The existing plan ha s no room for overflow parking . Moving this existing project to the suggested location at the corner of Prado Road and Elks Lane wil l significantly lower the impact of the potential problems . Yes, it will delay progress and initially cost more, bu t isn't it better to do what is right, than to allow a hasty decision that will undoubtably create problems and cost u s all a lot more in years to come ? This spontaneous, unofficial group (represented by The Tribune as "Bill Thoma and other SLO busines s owners") who oppose the current plan have been criticized for not speaking up before now . That is because thi s plan has just surfaced, for the most part by word of mouth and recent media coverage . I have personally spoken with at least 15 nearby business owners (some who have been at their current location for many years) an d NONE of them had any prior knowledge of this project, or had ever been notified to participate in it's plannin g or approval . By the way, this group of hard working local business owners create jobs, products, services, an d pay taxes that serve our local community . Please recognize that those who oppose the current location are NOT against the overall plan of helping th e homeless . We already have and will continue to help them . We just want it to work without a negative impact . Respectfully , Steve Hilstei n MUSIC MOTIVE at. Get started.Go further. ea Steve Hilstein, Directo r Music Motiv e 3440 S .
