Heathe r As a business owner in the general vicinity of the newly proposed homeless center on South Higuera I see nothing wron g with the proposed location . The site is in a wonderful spot – right next to Social Services, within easy access to publi c transportation, etc . The amount of foot traffic that will be coming into the facility will walk directly in front of the Social Services buildin g and should in no way shape or form effect the day-to-day business of businesses located in the South Higuera area – especially businesses that are on the OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET . I find it reprehensible for anyone in a position to assist to complain about something that would help those in need . I f the sheer number of homeless children in San Luis Obispo doesn't garner a response from the community I don't kno w what will . We in the business community need to lead by example . Help those in need because we can . There is no place in today's society for a NIMBY attitude towards this project . As for complaints about vandalism and cars being broken into – there is no grounds for it to be blamed on homeless .I should know – our commercial kitchen is in the same complex as the frame shop who had an auto break in . We an d 2 many other tenants at that complex I~ve vehicles in the lot on a regular basis at rit and have not had a problem . We are BLOCKS away from the proposed center, not next door . Just because someone is homeless does not mean they ar e out to vandalize or damage or otherwise destroy property that doesn't not belong to them . Yes, there will always be th e exception of the one person that does something that makes it look bad for everyone else . But if we in San Luis Obisp o are able to live with college kids in close vicinity to our homes and businesses - and trust me we all know they ca n certainly cause noise, damage and litter in our community, we can certainly lend a hand and support this new cente r that will benefit those in need . Having the center on South Higuera will effect our businesses the exact same as it does having the center on Prado . There will be no effect . I recall speaking to Russell about this issue almost a year ago, and found it to be a very enlightening conversation . Please give me a call at your convenience . Thanks ! John Ashbaug h 550-7713 3
