It is so encouraging to have leaders who listen to the Community . Finally ! I congratulate you for turning your attention toward the long neglected neighborhoods, especially those with a very hig h student density . I would like to invite you (especially John Ashbaugh) to drive to Cuesta Drive when you have the time . Park your car on Cuesta and walk . You must walk to absorb what has been going on there, even bicycling won't do . Weave up and down North Tassajara, La Canada, Santa Lucia, etc . I have nicknamed this area "little Detroit" because , without the trees (thank God they are there), that's what it looks like . As many as 75% houses are student rentals i n some places, the majority being Cuesta students . People always blame Cal Poly, but we forget that Cuesta is NOT a community college anymore . 6,000 Cuesta students come from elsewhere, yet we don't ask Cuesta to build housing . We should . When I moved to Ferrini Rd . in 1978, the area between Foothill and Highland was an area of affordable housing fo r young families . Houses were modest, but well-maintained . Kids walked to the local school (then Teach School), an d played together after school . I watched things crumble little by little . First, the stupid legal decision that declared 5 students make a family . Then greed . You know what happened, I don't need to tell you . When the school distric t added insult to injury by moving Pacheco here (an unnecessary move considering the real Pacheco was bigger), the y added 300 cars and 8 buses daily, plus ugly portables and buildings to our small neighborhood . I watched one third o f the long-time residents leave and I thought of doing the same . Two things stopped me . 1) nobody has the right to kic k out of my home, especially inconsiderate school administrators ; 2) this neighborhood is dear to me and must b e d . I am willing to work very hard to save it . Therefore, I am very grateful for what you are doing . Thank you . 1 z IeJAv a uk)
