Can we agree to stay on topic? Because past councils, apparently , were too worried about offending Cal Poly— or perhaps felt too defeated when they occasionally tried , no real progress was made toward building dorms . The most recently built ones,as you all surely know, is an attempt to address ONLY INCREASED enrollment—and only AFTER 2000 .) ITEM NO.:.~o',.r . Efforts by RON and supported by others have made some difference . However, we have a long way to go before we can experience neighborhood s where permanent residents want to stay, participate in city groups, vote for city government and feel part of a vibrant community . The "at risk" neighborhood s need the most (and deserve the most) attention . Those of us in "better' neighborhood s have a heart for them—and so should every member of Council . Before I go any further, let us agree that : •This in no way negates the value of the University . •This in no way negates the economic boon . •This in no way casts a negative light on a young and vibrant group o f students . ( In fact, they and their parents would like more quality housing as in the newer dorms ) RECEIVE D JAN 26 201 3 I SLC CITY CLERK `this is true!:). Sadly so :( ider all the money raised and the many buildings erected ....and not a penny during ALL thos e rs nt on even a "token° dorm . During those years we had residents literally forced from their belove d homes because they could no longer stand the disturbances on their streets . I personally met a dozen of them from '01 to '03 on the west side of Santa Rosa . Neighborhoods on the east side had already falle n victim to the circumstances . Wouldn't you like to be the Council that makes a difference? This is about having a real town tha t everyon e can be proud of . Will there still be students renting houses? Yes . Will block after block after bloc k have 60-80% of the homes rented to students . We can only hope not . Inner cities have been revitalized ; why can't SLO neighborhoods . How many families can we appea l to moving in ? That is going to rest on the shoulders of those who can/should speak for San Luis ... I VOTE FO R YOU! Again, we'll do it positively as our only focus will be on real families in homes where real children pla y and on professionals who want to live in San Luis Obispo among those with similar interests . s make a vow to renew, re establish and re focus on "retro"–real neighborhoods . Thank yo u I know you have important decisions to make ! Camille Smal l Skylin e 805 215 777 1 • 2
