Subject: LUCE - Airport Land Use Commission override
Dear Mayor Marx and City Council Members,
I,urge that you place on the agenda for reconsideration your recent decision to override the Airport Land Use
Commission which would allow for the construction of housing on land adjacent to the airport. I opposed your
initial decision and I think the recent letter sent to you from Caltrans should give you all pause - and at least
lead you to hold further discussion and take public comment regarding this vital issue.
I believe the building of housing as proposed in such close proximity to the county airport, particularly without
the approval of the Airport Land Use Commission - and now Caltrans - is fool hearty and reckless and opens the
door to future litigation against the city should an accident occur which destroys lives or property.
Unfortunately accidents happen - and in all probability one will occur here; we just don't know when. Consider
Santa Monica and the recent crash landing by Harrison Ford on a golf course adjacent to the airport. This is
why homes are not built adjacent to an airport! And apparently residents near this airport are now trying to get
it shut down due to noise or perhaps safety concerns. How many times has this happened?
Our airport was here long before homes began encroaching upon it. We need to allow room for it to grow along
with our city and county, not constrict it and reduce the safety of passengers and residents by surrounding it
with new homes. Once people live closer to the airport they will undoubtedly object to the noise and seek to
curtail its growth or perhaps its very existence.
Every time a developer seeks your approval to build more homes here you will butt heads again and again with
the Airport Land Use Commission and Caltrans. Is this really an appropriate and responsible way to govern? I
have to believe you can come up with a better solution to this problem if you try.
Please reconsider your prior vote and seek an amicable meeting of the minds with the Airport Land Use
Commission and Caltrans. The safety of our residents and the viability of our airport deserve nothing less.
Thank you.
