Subject: SLO Rental Ordinance Proposal
Dear Mayor Marx and City Council Members,
I will be out of town on the day the rental ordinance will be discussed so I ask that I be allowed to support the concerns
listed in the letter from Shannon Fitzpatrick, President of the SLO Association of Realtors, and offer one more
perspective: I own a condo in Santa Cruz near the UC Santa Cruz campus and have been assessed a $65 "self -
certification" fee for a rental inspection (not $20) in less than one year of owning the condo whose condition is evident
in the online pictures available to anyone who wants to see it and whose safety compliance is documented in all of the
escrow paperwork. Despite its extremely good condition and professional management (I am not managing the rental
myself), I have to prove to the city that I am in compliance which is in my opinion excessive and onerous. I would rather
offer evidence in some way that the lease agreement proves there are only 3 people living in a 2 bedroom condo and all
the necessary safety documentation is already on file from the escrow. Isn't this a possibility instead of this invasive
process that is being proposed? Wouldn't it be better to spend money on increasing the police enforcement for noise
regulation after 10:00 p.m. (as is the case in Santa Cruz) and focus on the obvious offenders?
Respectfully,
Nicole Hoffman
