Subject: "Shifting Modes Within South Broad Street Neighborhoods" Proposal
My family has lived above Meadow Park area of Broad/South street corridor since 1973. We have witnessed
the transformation of a rather quiet pleasant area to one with an explosion of vehicular traffic and
noise. Through-
out the years we have found it more and more difficult to not only access South or Broad, but extremely
dangerous
in attempting to make a left turn towards downtwn or to the freeway. Walking on Broad Street is at best, very
unpleasant as well as dangerous.
I have attended almost every meeting the city has held regarding the safety of our area. Each time, the group
represented was different, each promising to address the concerns we have about safety. However, each group
usually presented us with drawings of some new development along the Broad Street Corridor. After each
instance, new building/development would take place, but with almost no improvement in safety. We have
been very discouraged
that the city would allow this explosion of development along with the increased traffic through a residential
area without implementing at least one crosswalk or light within the 1/2 mile corridor between Broad/South and
Orcutt and Higuera. I know it is also Route 227, but Santa Rosa, or Hwy 1 has been able to accommodate lights
for each block for foot traffic. Surely it can't be that expensive to lower the speed limit if nothing else is done.
As I look at the proposal, Project #1 alone would be a vast improvement, one I would wholeheartedly support
as it
would slow the speed of traffic and would certainly incorporate some of the other points such as accessibility.
I know the city has and continues to find monies for its beautification programs (new decorative sidewalks, etc),
but could it not recognize that street safety for pedestrians, bicylists, noise and pollution is a real issue for its
residents
and one that should not only be fixed through grants?
