Subject: Proposed Rental Inspection Program
Dear Mr Johnson:
REC.L IVIE",.
MAY 0 6 2015
SLO CITY CLERK
COUNCIL MEETING: 05- 05-15 _
ITEM NO.; Rq
We are not in favor of the proposed Rental Housing Inspection Program. Though there are some problem rental
properties, the program imposes costs and intrusion for the majority of landlords who maintain lawful rental properties.
There are currently laws on the books that allow the City to inspect dangerous properties and tenants to lodge
complaints. The cost of rental housing is already unaffordable for many in SLO - adding fees to landlords will only
increase rents.
We would FAR prefer that the City Council engage with Cal Poly with a focused long -term effort to increase on- campus
housing, limit enrollment growth and reduce student housing in SLO neighborhoods. This is is what will be the most
effective use of staff time and resources to improve quality of life in SLO.
Sincerely,
Ben Parker
