MINUTES
Parks and Recreation Administrative Office
Wednesday, May 8, 2002
CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Chair Ron Batterson, Committee Members Wes Conner, Gerry Johnson, Bill
Pyper, Marion Rodman, Martha Schwartz, and John Tischler
STAFF: Rich Ogden, Larry Tolson, and Heather Freebairn.
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There was no public comment.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The minutes of the April 10, 2001 meeting were approved with the following amendments:
Add Marion Rodman to Roll Call.
Item #4- should read, “…open for Friday tours”.
Financial report of May 2002, was accepted as presented.
Item # 1: Swearing in of New Members
Assistant City Clerk, Mary Kopecky swore in Gerry Johnson and Bill Pyper as Committee Members
for the Jack House Committee.
Items #2: Carriage/Buggy House
Tolson presented the Committee with a memo summarizing ideas for the Jack House Carriage/Buggy
House. Discussion ensued and the following items were emphasized:
Relocate carriage to make room for storage in the Buggy House.
Conner recommended for the driveway improvement: red rock be installed in two courses
(large rock first, and fine rock second) installed wet.
Investigate the sale of the old Persian rugs.
Flocked Christmas tree can be move to the City Corporation Yard (Corp Yard) for any City
department to use.
Fencing can be moved to the Corp Yard.
Move forward with ideas for the chair and table storage.
Schwartz presented photographs of the original cistern.
Stored railings will be used on the front porch.
Roofing structure to be moved to the Corp. Yard.
Service building will be designated as the Bride’s Room.
Batterson suggested leaving the door off the pantry to display items. The hinges and doorplate
should be left.
On a motion by Schwartz, seconded by Rodman, the Committee voted 7:0 to approve the Moonstone
carpet (sample #55022) and to move forward on the installation in the “Brides Room”.

Item #3: Shade Structure
The Director of Parks and Recreation, Paul LeSage, has expressed a desire to have the shade structure
donated to the City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Departments to be used for new Damon
Garcia fields.
On a motion by Conner, and seconded by Batterson, the Committee voted 7:0 to donate the shade
structure to the City of San Luis Obispo, Parks and Recreation Department to be used for their new
fields.
Item #4: Jack House Hours
Schwartz invited Richard Dresp, a Docent representative, to present the views of the Docents on the
Jack House tour hours subject. Chair Batterson requested each Committee Member to give their view
on this matter.
On a motion by Pyper, and seconded by Johnson, the Committee voted 7:0 to have the Jack House
open for tours every Sunday between the hours of 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm with a three-year commitment.
Dresp and Schwartz stated the Docents are willing to insert a sticker on the existing brochures
with the new day and hour’s information.
Item#5: Reports and Updates
Ogden reported the Art in the Garden project is going ahead as planned.
Schwartz reported the following:
o Stove in the kitchen will be repaired soon.
o Piano should be restrung and ready by Mother’s Day.
o Light in the dining room is not working properly.
o Requested a special door be installed into the Gift Shop that would designate to the
public the shop is open, but would keep the heat in.
o Secure resources for having Victorian style dried flower arrangements made for the
various rooms in the Jack House.
On a motion by Pyper, and seconded by Conner, the Committee voted 7:0 to allocate $250.00 for dried
flower arrangements in the Jack House.
Tischler stated he would research various doors that can be used for the Gift Shop.
Parking continues to be a problem. Committee discussed possible solutions. Pyper stated he
would investigate with the City of San Luis Obispo and explore a variety of avenues for a
solution.
Mother’s Day, the Jack House will be open from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. The public can take a
self-guided tour with the Docents strategically placed.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:40pm to the June 12, 2002 regular meeting at 7:00 pm.
