MINUTES
Parks and Recreation Administrative Office
Wednesday, August 14, 2002 7:00 pm
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Chair Ron Batterson, Commissioners Wes Conner, Bill Pyper, Gerry Johnson,
Marion Rodman, Martha Schwartz, and John Tischler.
ABSENT: All present.
STAFF: Rich Ogden, Larry Tolson, and Heather Freebairn.
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There was no public comment.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The minutes of the June 12, 2002 meeting were approved with the following amendments:
Item #2: Wasp be changed to Bee
Motion by Schwartz should read: to deasses the Oriental Rugs…
Item # 1: Art In The Garden Wrap-Up (Sub-Committee)
Schwartz reported the Sub-Committee would be scheduling a meeting with Kim Walker, the
City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Departments Public Information Officer.
Johnson stated that she received positive feedback and the artists would like to make this a
two-day event.
Committee discussed the length of the event. Batterson suggested the event should conclude
by 6:00pm.
Tolson questioned the impact the event has on the lawn and grounds.
Rodman requested the park benches be cleaned prior to the event.
Items #2: Reports and Updates
Monthly Activities-Staff/Public Works
Tolson Report:
Stove Repaired.
Bees removed.
Carpet installed.
Bathroom walls painted.
Curtains Cleaned.
Front porch finished.
Buggy Shed project continues
Driveway brick will be installed and sealed
Comments:
Conner has requested to be present during the preparation of the gazebo and the sealing of the
driveway brick.
Batterson reported there are boards on the front porch that need replacing.

Conner and Tolson will schedule a meeting to discuss the final stages of the bank building
project and the impact on the landscape of the Jack House Gardens.
Ogden Report:
Piano tuner is to resume work.
Schwartz Report:
Request made to move the video equipment into the Buggy Shed.
Request made to move an iron bed to Nanny’s Room.
Would like to have a Committee meeting to specifically discuss the use of the Buggy Shed and
how the artifacts are to be displayed.
Committee would like to direct the removal of shelves from Nanny’s Room
Request made to purchase new curtains and a small dressing table for the Bride’s Room.
Two new docents have been recruited.
Front porch sign should be changed to reflect the new days and times.
Publicity for Christmas tours should start soon, the Committee would like to include the Jack
House Gift Shop in the text.
An itemized list has been created of items that can be used for display in the Buggy Shed.
A total of 215 people toured the Jack House during the Art In The Garden event, most of who
were locals.
A bill will be submitted for the dried flower arrangements being created for the Jack House.
Tischler Report:
Tischler gave his finding on research for a door suitable for the Jack House Gift Shop.
On a motion by Tischler, seconded by Pyper the committee voted 7:0 to accept the research,
cost, design and installation of a new door with double pain glass for the Jack House Gift
Shop.
Action: Tolson to order door and will bill the Jack House account directly.
Miscellaneous Reports:
Carpet soiled on landing of stairs.
Bathroom and kitchen floors have scuffmarks.
Suggested to add photo albums with video and TV in the Buggy House.
Pyper has proposed to the City Council to hire an employee to man the Jack House one to two
days a week.
Books donated to the Cal Poly library were accepted as a Deed of Gift.
The Jack House Committee has received a thank you letter from the Red Cross for the
September 11th donation.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:35 pm to the September 11, 2002 regular meeting at 7:00 pm.
