Jack House Committee
MINUTES
Parks and Recreation Administrative Office
Wednesday, August 13, 2003 5:30 PM
CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Wes Conner called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Vice Chair Wes Conner, Committee Members Gerry Johnson, Marion
Rodman, Martha Schwartz, and John Tischler.
ABSENT: Ron Batterson and Bill Pyper.
STAFF: Kim Walker, Larry Tolson and Jill Lemieux.
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There was no public comment.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The minutes of May 14, 2003 meeting were approved with one correction in Ogden Staff Report, a
fee increase of $110 will be added to all rentals of the Jack House Gardens.
The Financial Report for June, 2003 was presented and accepted.
The Financial Report for July, 2003 was presented and accepted.
ITEM #1: SLO Botanical Garden Presentation
Jackie Kane reported the SLO Botanical Garden is interested in using the Jack House Garden area
as their kickoff sight for the next Garden Tour fundraiser scheduled for June 5, 2004. The SLO
Botanical Garden Organization would like to have the Jack House Garden rental fees waived for the
event.
Schwartz made a motion to support the SLO Botanical Garden Organization in a fee waiver for the
use of the Jack House Gardens. The motion was approved unanimously.
ITEM #2: Wash House Gift Shop Cash Register
Kane reported the cash register in the Jack House Gift Shop often does not match up with receipts.
Some volunteers have a difficult time with the current accounting and tracking procedures for gift
shop merchandise.
Kane asked the committee to consider a new type of cash register with a scanner that would allow
for automatic tracking of inventory. Estimated cost was $374 for a Royal Brothers electric cash
register.
Johnson made a motion to table the issue until the September committee meeting. The motion was
approved unanimously.
Reports and Updates
Monthly Activities
Tolson reported on the following:
- A new light was installed on the porch that would shine on the raised flag at night.
Conner requested a lock be placed on the flag pole to secure the raised flag.
- Irrigation was extended to the back fence landscaping.

- Glass was placed on the vanity in the Brides Room.
- Fire sprinkler plans for inside the Jack House are in committee development and
once they are approved the plans will be sent to Jobs on Contract (JOC). Sprinklers
for the Gift Shop and Service Building will have to be done at a later time under a
different project.
Walker Reported on the following:
- Walker stated the total income generated from Art in the Garden was approximately
$12,000. The Jack House fund will receive 10%, just over $1,100.
- Walker received feed back from participating artists and a request was made by
some that Art in the Garden become a two-day event.
Lemieux reported on the following:
- The July 16 Chamber of Commerce Mixer was attended by approximately 180
people. The total budget was under $1,300.
Docent Activities
Schwartz reported on the following:
- A love seat and two chairs were purchased for $200 for the Bridal Room.
- The carpet in the Bridal Room is very dirty and she is requesting a lock be placed on
the door connecting the Bridal Room to the Kitchen to eliminate caterer traffic in the
Bridal Room.
- There are two new people interested in becoming Docents.
- 137 people toured the Jack House during Art in the Garden.
- Piano has had a tune up and sounds better, but still needs some work. A request was
made to have the piano tuner back for addition work.
- More tours have been reported for 2003 compared to 2002.
- Jack House inventory has been misplaced.
- Dates of Jack Family births and deaths were discussed.
Member Comments
- Johnson stated that the Jack House gate should be closed and locked during the day,
but noticed it was open when she went by during the week.
- Rodman will get information regarding the Historical Societies recent request for a
fee waiver for the Jack House Gardens.
- Tischler would like to look into the Rotary taking on the fence project for around the
Japanese Maple tree. Tischler and Conner discussed changing the fence material
from redwood to pressure treated wood to reduce the cost of the fence. Tischler
volunteered to do another work weekend at the Jack House Gardens.
- Rodman stated that nothing has been done yet to secure the tools to the Buggy House
wall.
Communications
There were no communications.
Meeting adjourned at 7:10 pm to the September 10, 2003 meeting at Parks and Recreation
Administration Office at 5:30 pm.
