MINUTES
Parks and Recreation Administrative Office
Wednesday, October 13, 2004 5:30 PM
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 5:34 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Vice Chair Wes Conner, Committee Members Bill Pyper, Marion Rodman, John
Tischler and Gerry Johnson.
STAFF: Rich Ogden, Larry Tolson and Kim Walker.
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There was no public comment.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The minutes of September 2004 meeting were approved with following correction:
Everyone on the absent list of the September minutes was present for the September
meeting.
The Financial Report for September 2004 was presented and accepted with a request to Rich Ogden
to double check the funds available for Promotions and confirm that the listed amount is correct.
ITEM #1: Major City Goals
The Jack House Committee will pass along to the Parks and Recreation Commission
and the San Luis Obispo City Council Members the following request:
o Accelerate the preservation of the Jack House to enhance its historical and
cultural value to the community.
Proposed Projects
1. Fence & Gate Replacement
2. Foundation Stabilization & Drainage
3. Heating in House
4. Fire Sprinklers
5. Elevator/Bay Window
ITEM #2: Continuing Brochure Discussion – Quotes
Committee reviewed available samples of brochures from two vendors.
The Committee will have more samples and bids to consider at the November meeting.
January 2005 is the estimated completion date for the Brochures.
ITEM #3: Jack House Calendar
Finalize activities and dates of the Jack House.
o No Docent meeting in July, 2005.
o Art in the Garden will be held on August 21, 2005 not August 28, 2005. The last
Jack House tour will begin at 4:30 pm instead of 3:30 pm on that day.

Reports and Updates
Monthly Activities
Ogden announced the Docent appreciation dinner on November 10, 2004 at 4:00p.m.
at the Ludwick Community Center.
Tolson will have Poinsettias delivered December 9, 2004 to the Jack House.
Tolson reported that a city employee found the gift shop large door was partially
open. The latch needs to be secured from the inside to ensure proper closure.
Tolson reported that Betty Stockton was named Volunteer of the Year. Volunteer of
the Year award will now be called the “Martha Schwartz Volunteer of the Year
Award”.
Tolson reported the new walkway on the driveway side creates a water pool near the
elevator. Conner & Tischler will look to resolve the problem.
Tolson will look into the issue of drilling into the roots of the tree for the fire
sprinkler system from the house. Tolson will get more information on this issue after
January 2005.
Docent Activities
Dresp reported the following:
o -Docents created a sub committee for Strategic Planning;
o -The carpets in the front have been cleaned;
o -Docents next meeting will focus on Holiday planning and a dedication day
o in honor of Martha Schwartz;
o -Docents will have a party and open house on February 5th at 2pm to recruit
docents.
o -Docents are planning an open house for the media, county and city
employees.
Member Comments
Committee Member Conner reported that the garden looks run down and not well
maintained. Several plants that were recently planted are now dead.
Johnson mentioned that the Martha Schwartz memorial was very well attended and by
people who have never seen the Jack House before.
Communications
No communications were presented.
Meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m. to the November 10th meeting at 4:00 pm at the Ludwick
Community Center.
