HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-17-07 JHC MinutesJack House Committee MINUTES Parks and Recreation Administrative Office Wednesday, January 17, 2007 5:30 PM CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Gerry Johnson called the meeting to order at 5.32 p.m. ROLL CALL: Committee Members Wes Conner, Patrick Mayeda, Betty Stockton and JohnTischler ABSENT: Ron Batterson and Bill Pyper GUESTS: Jackie Kane, Audrey Hooper STAFF: Christine Wallace PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD: There was no public comment. CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT: The minutes of the November 8, 2006 meeting were approved. The Financial Reports for November & December 2006 were approved. ITEM #1: Swearing in of Betty Stockton • Audrey Hooper from the City Clerk’s office was present to conduct the swearing in ceremony of Betty Stockton to the Jack House & Gardens Committee. ITEM #2: Smoke Free Garden • Conner would like to explore the possibility of having a no smoking policy for the Jack House Gardens. Possibly no smoking anywhere inside the fence of the Jack House Gardens. • Tischler asked if ash trays were maintained more regularly, would that help the situation. • Tischler and Mayeda expressed concern for establishing too many rules at the Jack House & Gardens A motion was made to request that the San Luis Obispo City Council adopt a rule that states no smoking within the fence of the Jack House. Vice Chair ruled motion failed due to lack of a second motion. ITEM #3: English Holly • Conner did not have new information to report on the English Holly replacement. • There is an English Holly available in Oregon, but it is very expensive ~ approx. $3,000 - $4,000 plus moving costs. • The size needed for the space would need to be at least a 10 foot tree (24-36 gallon). • Johnson offered to ask Home Depot to donate a tree. • Conner asked for this issue to be revisited in the future. ITEM #4: Picket Fence • The picket fence project has not progressed. There will be volunteers available when the project is approved to move forward. • Jim Hoffman, from Rotary, is the person leading the project. He is currently working to move things forward. • Project should be completed before the start of the Jack House wedding season in May. Reports and Updates • Monthly Activities – Staff/Public Works o Wallace reviewed the 2007 calendar of events with committee. o Jack House will be closed January through March 2007. o Jack House committee will continue to meet the second week of each month. o There will not be a Jack House Committee meeting in July 2007. o Art in the Garden event will close at 5.00 pm and the last tour of the Jack House will begin at 4.30 for that day. o Any work requests will be given to Public Works department to address. • Docent Activities Jackie Kane reported on the following items: o Holiday Tours at the Jack House had low attendance because of rain. o Docents have requested making the Holiday decoration more festive for the next year. A suggestion of having fresh, decretive greens available would help. More Poinsettias plants will be needed in December 2007. o The Jack House web site needs to be updated regularly. o The solar lights in the gift shop do not work well enough to use in the garden. o There is still a need for new docents. They currently have 14 regular docents. • Member Comments o Tischler announced this is his last Jack House Committee meeting before he moves out of town. He will be able to assist on special projects if he is contacted. o Conner suggested having Victorian Tea’s as a Jack House fundraiser. o Stockton mentioned that her new seat on the Jack House Committee was very special to her. o Johnson would like to find out who the City Council Jack House Liaison is for this year. o Conner announced this would be his last Jack House Committee meeting. He is resigning and would like the committee to follow up on the projects he mentioned earlier in the meeting. • Communications No communications were presented. Meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m. to the February 14, 2007, 5:30 pm at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building.
