ROLL CALL: Committee Members Gerry Johnson, Kathi Settle and Kylie Hatch ABSENT: Ron Batterson, Bob Gordon and Betty Stockton STAFF: Christine Wallace GUESTS: Toni Kincaid PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD: There were no public comments. CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT: The minutes of February 2010 were approved. The February 2010 Financial Report was approved. REGULAR ITEMS ITEM #1: Plant Stand – Gordon/Mayeda/Kincaid • Kincaid requested $100 for the purchase of a Victorian style plant stand to be used in the Jack House. Mayeda made a motion to authorize up to $100 to be used for the purchase of a plant stand. The motion was passed unanimously. ITEM #2: Gazebo – Mayeda • Wallace presented the blueprints for the original/existing gazebo. • If the gazebo needs to be rebuilt, the original plans could be used. • CHC will need to review and approve any replacement since the gazebo was part of the master list of city historical structures. The gazebo is not part of the original historical Jack House, but it was built in late 1970’s. • A prefabricated structure cost is approximately $15,000. If the original gazebo needs to be taken down it must be replaced by May 1, 2010. • The gazebo is used often during events, especially weddings. • When a new structure is built, ADA compliance must be taken into consideration and a possible ramp may be needed. • The current octagon shape is a very typical for the Victorian era. The original foundation is an octagon shape concrete pad. • Mayeda shared feedback from Batterson: like to keep the original design for any new structure. Jack House Committee Minutes for March 10, 2010 Page 2 of 3 • Settle: CHC may not have a significant amount of feedback if the new gazebo is built in the same style. If it is new style and different material, they may have more input and may take longer to get approved. • Settle would like to have the ramp and railing be placed in the back side of the gazebo. • The sidewalk behind the gazebo is not currently ADA compliant. The sidewalk replacement is not a project that is currently funded or scheduled for construction. • Mayeda asked for feedback about a new design vs. keeping the current design. • Johnson: if keep the same design as old gazebo, the project approvals may go more quickly with CHC. • Wallace offered to get bids for the cost of rebuilding gazebo using the original designs. • Mayeda – directed Wallace to send out project for bid, to project possible costs. If the prefabricated designs are less expensive, then it will be considered for next steps. Also, asked if the current design is acceptable for earthquake compliance. • Settle: asked what materials are going to be used to ensure there is not going to be a termite or weathering issues again over the next 20 years? • The interior (upside down) finial often breaks because renters tend to hang floral or other decorations on it. This is not a feature on the original design. • Mayeda – would like to have gazebo subject on the April agenda. Reports and Updates Monthly Activities – Staff/Public Works Christine Wallace reported on the following: • Jack House fund does have some money to put towards the gazebo, but not enough to cover the entire cost. Jack Hammond, Lions Club, would like to hear about the gazebo project. Wallace is having lunch with him in April to discuss options for gazebo project. • Various grants may be used in addition to the Jack House fund for the gazebo project. • Reviewed advertising schedule for Mother’s Day. Would like to have the Jack House logo recreated for a high quality, high resolution file to use in new advertising campaigns. The cost is approximately $50. • Mother’s Day promotions at the SLO Chamber Good Day SLO April breakfast will consist of free flyers/post cards set at each place setting. The supplies and costs are listed and similar to the 2009 costs. • House cleaning – what needs to be done at this time? Kincaid will supply Wallace with a list of items to be cleaned. Docent Activities Kincaid reported on the following items: • Presented a display of new picture frames with Jack House family photos. • The SLO Journal featured a free call for volunteers. • Presented Buggy Shed improvement notes. She listed priorities of work projects to committee members. There are supplies that need to be moved out of the Buggy Shed to make room for new improvements. There is attic space in the structure. • The Buggy Shed only needs to be cleaned out and the buggy cleaned as well. Use space for display area or work shop area if needed. Associated costs were not mentioned at this time. May want to address in April 2010 meeting. Jack House Committee Minutes for March 10, 2010 Page 2 of 3 • Wallace offered to have extra supplies moved from the Buggy Shed to the Ludwick Center if needed. • Kincaid provided list of silk plants needed for Jack House decorations. • Tea service on display is tarnished. Catherine Trujillo recommended not polishing because it could lower the value of the set. Kincaid recommended it be re-silvered, not just polished. The cost of re-silvering is just over $1000. • March 17, 2010 RSVP is having a volunteer fair and the Jack House docents will have a table and there is no cost associated with this event. • Would like to consider a Father’s Day ice cream social this year. Is it a possibility? Member Comments • Settle: Had luncheon Susanne Watkins. Watkins offered information and ideas that could benefit the Jack House. She requested an invitation to a Jack House Committee meeting to share her ideas. Would like to put on future agenda. Communications • No communications at this time. Meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m. Next meeting is April 14, 2010 at 5:30 pm at the San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Administration Office.
