MINUTES
San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Administration
Wednesday, April 14, 2010 5:30 p.m.
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Committee Members: Vice Chair Patrick Mayeda, Gerry Johnson, Kathi
Settle, Bob Gordon, Betty Stockton and Kylie Hatch
STAFF: Christine Wallace, Amy Voorhies
GUESTS: Toni Kincaid, Suzanne Watkins and Katchy Andrews
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There were no public comments.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The minutes of March 2010 were approved.
The March 2010 Financial Report was approved.
REGULAR ITEMS
ITEM #1: Presentation- Suzanne Watkins
• Proposal 1
o To create a 501c3 non-profit organization or foundation in support of the Jack House
o Maintain City ownership
o Modeled after “Friends of Hearst Castle”
• Proposal 2
o Anonymous bequest coming to the Jack House should be used to repair and preserve
the interior of the house, specifically the living room and dining room.
o Repair stains on walls
o Preservation of drapery and wall coverings
o Recommend that the moiré fabric for the drapery be purchased as soon as possible
since it is no longer widely available. The fabric costs $23/yard. It would cost $1464
to purchase all the fabric that is currently available.
• Gordon wants the investigation of creating a foundation on the May agenda as an action
item.
• Batterson asked that the moiré fabric purchase be placed on the May agenda as an action
item.
• Kincaid recommended that the May meeting be held on site at the Jack House.

• Nominations were taken for the positions of Chair and Vice Chair of the Jack House
Committee for 2010.
A motion was made to re-elect Ron Batterson as Chair of the Jack House Committee
and to re-elect Patrick Mayeda as Vice Chair of the Jack House Committee. The motion
was passed unanimously.
Reports and Updates
Monthly Activities – Staff/Public Works
Christine Wallace reported on the following:
• Mother’s Day Event
o Donation agreement with Madonna Inn for 50% off cake for event
o Posters, postcards and florist cards will be used for event promotion
• The City is facing a $1.8 million budget gap in this 09-11 fiscal year, Parks and Recreation
Department has to cut $450,000
o Wallace offered $2800 of the $3000 left over in Jack House promotional funds that
will not be used for the remainder of the 09-10 year. It is unknown if this money will
be taken as part of the budget cut.
o The promotional budget was not offered for 10-11 cuts as the Gazebo project is
coming in that year.
• Wallace received 3 estimates for the gazebo construction costs
o Estimate 1 from Gazebo Vic, $27,000 provides a prefabricated structure in clear
redwood. Cost includes delivery.
o Estimate 2 ranged from $25,000-$50,000. The estimate included options for douglas
fir, redwood or clear redwood materials, demolition of current structure and ADA
compliance.
o Wallace recommended that the Jack House Committee form a gazebo subcommittee
to explore more options, meet with Public Works, create a timeline and fundraising
ideas.
• Kay Kaetzel trust process will be finalized in 30-60 days.
o Taxes will be paid tomorrow and a final amount will be known after that is
complete.
• Measure Y Community Meeting is being held on April 28 at 7 p.m. in the Library
Community Room. It is strongly recommended that committee members attend.
• Batterson requested volunteers to sit on the gazebo subcommittee
o Mayeda volunteered to chair the committee, Hatch and Batterson volunteered.
Wallace joined as staff liaison.
Docent Activities
Kincaid reported on the following items:
• Kincaid took Lighthouse and Heritage House Tours.
o Heritage House tours about 1000 kids per year from elementary schools.
o Two class tours are scheduled for April and May from Monarch Grove and Los
Ranchos.
• Gordon’s nosegay party was successful.

• An estimate for replating the silver came in at $824 including tax and shipping. The
original estimate 5 years ago was $1064.
• 12 people toured the house on Sunday in the extremely rainy weather.
• Moved docent information to the end of the tour in the kitchen.
Member Comments
• Johnson- Marilyn Forselles mentioned the Monday Club’s Architecture Tour and
wants the Jack House to be a part of the event. Johnson to find out more information
about how to get on the list of sites toured.
• Gordon-Rotary holds a similar tour in the fall and the Jack House would be perfect
for the site that provides refreshments. Wilda Roseen is the Rotary contact for that
event.
Communications
• No communications at this time.
Meeting adjourned at 7:12 p.m. Next meeting is May 12, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. at the Jack
House.
