REGULAR ITEMS ITEM #1: Goal Setting – Wallace After a group discussion, the following goals were decided upon for the 2009/11 San Luis Obispo City budget cycle. • Buggy Shed restoration • Removal of elevator shaft and restore original bay window Reports and Updates Monthly Activities – Staff/Public Works Christine Wallace reported on the following: • Provided a detailed report on Art in the Garden expenditures. The total amount for the event was $2,182.40. It did go over budget by less than $200. • Wallace and other Parks & Recreation staff are generating new ideas to increase attendance for future events that showcase the Jack House. For future events there may be a shift to incorporate more entertainment based events rather than passive, leisure events with goods for sale. • Bob Gordon suggested utilizing the garden to incorporate the most popular hobby, gardening, for future Jack House events. May want to do “how to” classes or special events on gardening techniques and horticulture education. Some suggested topics included: exotic fruit growers, flower arranging, succulent show, pruning/gardening education and seasonal plants for local climate. • Bob Gordon suggested planning a grand re-opening with a new event schedule available to public. Jack House Committee Minutes for October 8, 2008 Page 2 of 2 • Kincaid suggested having a mother/daughter tea party on the patio. • Construction on the Jack House foundation project started October 8th. Wallace will post a sign to public with closure notification while house is under construction. • Invitations will be sent out in approximately two weeks for the Docent Appreciation Dinner. It will be located at the San Luis Obispo City/County Library instead of the Ludwick Community Center this year. Docent Activities Toni Kincaid reported on the following items: Buggy Shed: • Volunteers may want to be considered to help work on the Buggy Shed restoration. The sliding door would need to be rebuilt to reflect the original design of the structure. The sliding door is currently made of plywood. • The historical society may need to be contacted to inquire about the Jack House using a buggy or other items from them to create an additional display. If the Buggy Shed were to open for viewing, the hours open to the public would be the same as the Jack House hours. There would be a need to have a docent available in the Buggy Shed in order to keep it open during regular house hours. • Fire Marshal concerns need to be addressed before any plans to open Buggy Shed structure to the public. Insurance issues need to be considered at this time as well. • The next docent field trip will take place on October 21, 2008 to the Pioneer Museum. • Two new docents have started training. • Katchy Andrews was very open to the idea of new costumes for docents and may be interested in funding this project. There was also discussion about the possibility of leaving the Hollister adobe to Cuesta College as a donation. Member Comments • Batterson – Stockton is concerned about a new shade in the nanny room, it is on order and should be installed soon. The shade for left side of elevator shaft fell off and is located in the pantry. The pantry window also needs a window shade. • Johnson expressed her appreciation of the new fence and hopes a thank you letter will be sent to the Rotary Club. • Batterson will send a thank you letter or note to the Rotary Club for the fence project. The letter should be addressed to Bob Hather, President of The Monday Rotary Club. • Mayeda would like to have Mike McGuire back at the Jack House committee meeting in January because there is no December meeting. McGuire’s attendance at the next Jack House meeting is dependent upon how fast the foundation project is moving along. • Bob Gordon is planning for the Floral Show in November. • Batterson recognized the outstanding dedication Bob Gordon delivered for the picket fence & Wes Conner dedication. • Bob Gordon shared details about how the original picket fence was created. The Edna 4H group was selling pickets for $1 each and that is how the fence was originally built. Communications • No communications at this time. Meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. to November 12, at 4:00 pm at the San Luis Obispo City/County Library, immediately followed by the Docent Appreciation Dinner.
