CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM.
ROLL CALL: Committee Members: Ron Batterson, Gerry Johnson, Kathi Settle, and
Bob Gordon
ABSENT: Susan Updegrove, Betty Stockton, and Patrick Mayeda
STAFF: Shannon Bates
GUESTS: Toni Kincaid, Marilyn Darnell, John Ashbaugh

CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES
MOTION: (Batterson/Settle) Approve the November 2012 minutes as submitted.
Member Gerry Johnson clarified spelling of Leslie McKinley’s name

CONSIDERATION OF FINANCIAL REPORT
MOTION: (Batterson/Settle) Approve the November/December 31, 2012 Financial Report as
submitted.
Docent President Kincaid asked about historical balance of the fund, discussion ensued

REGULAR ITEMS
1. ISBN Number Purchase – Marilyn Darnell
Guest Darnell, author of the House that Jack Built:
Requested the ISBN Numbers to be located by Parks and Recreation staff. Guest Darnell has
inquired via email with book publisher Bowkers to determine sequence of numbers.
Parks and Recreation Staff Member Bates:
Parks and Recreation staff will conduct research to find the numbers.

Guest Darnell:
Requested an account of the number of remaining House that Jack Built books.
Parks and Recreation Staff Member Bates:
Staff will provide the number of books located at the Parks and Recreation office.
2. Staff Reports and Updates: Parks and Recreation
Park and Recreation Staff Member Bates reported on the following:
*Jack House Fees: The City of San Luis Obispo will undergo a cost of service study. The study
examines direct and indirect costs for the City of San Luis Obispo. The findings of the study
assist on guiding the Parks and Recreation fee structure. Study is expected to be completed in 6
to 8 months. The results of the study will be presented to the Jack House Committee for review
of fees associated with the Jack House. Parks and Recreation recommends Jack House
Committee wait to see what the study recommends for fees and then discuss possible increases
or re-structuring of fees.
*Carriage House: Parks and Recreation and Building Maintenance staff would like to meet and
discuss the needs and wants of the Carriage House with the Jack House Committee. A sub-
committee (Gordon, Updegrove and Kincaid) will meet with City staff and report back to the
committee.
MOTION: (Batterson/Settle) Move that Susan Updegrove and Bob Gordon be a subcommittee to
discuss with Parks and Recreation the future use of the Carriage House.

*Gazebo: Parks and Recreation has submitted a Capital Improvement Project for the
refurbishment of the gazebo. Final decision on the Capital Improvement Project will be in May.
*Recreation Supervisor: In February, Parks and Recreation will have recruitment plan for
Community Service Recreation Supervisor.
3. Docent Activities
Guest and Docent President Kincaid reported on the following:
*Discussed possibility of raising the fee for house tours
*Reported that over 1000 people toured the house this year.
*Last year’s increase of the tour fee from $2 to $5 has increased revenue.
*2013 event dates:
Victorian Tea will be held August 11, 2013; would like the Friends Group to help
promote and raise funds for the Tea.
Haunted Jack House will be held on Sunday, October 20, and Sunday, October 27,
2013.
Victorian Christmas will be held on two separate Saturday nights and two separate
Sundays: December 7, 8, and December 14, 15 (eliminated Friday date as to
conflict with the downtown Holiday Parade).*Presented Jack House Docent goals
for 2013:

1. Better consistency with Jack House promotions. Requested that ads be proofed by Docent
President Kincaid
2. Improve outreach with community and schools.
*All garments the History Center loaned to the Jack House were in turn donated back to the house
by the History Center.
*History Center will loan dolls for Mother’s Day event.
*Guest Kincaid will continue to monitor basement for flooding.
5. Member Comments/Communications
Member Johnson:
*Open houses were excellent.
*Gift shop looked great.
Member Batterson:
*The House looked wonderful this year.
Meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m. Next meeting is February 13, 2013 at 5:30 pm at the San Luis
Obispo Parks and Recreation Administration Office.
