Subject: Polystyrene Ban
Dear City Council members,
OUNCIL MEETING: OCp
MAY 2 7 2015 `TEM NO.:_I_
My name is Laura Tremblay and I have been a resident of San Luis Obispo since 1976. 1 retired from San Luis
Coastal USD in 2012 after 37 wonderful years. I am writing to encourage you to please ban the use of all
plastic FOAM "Styrofoam" in San Luis Obispo. It is a disaster for our environment. It is not compostable or
biodegradable and can not be recycled. Because it is so lightweight it fills up our gutters and storm drains and
blocks them. It comprises 15% of storm drain litter. When it finally reaches "Cold Canyon" it simply blows away to
clutter the roads and surrounding land. If food is warmed up in a Styrofoam container then Styrene a hazardous
substance leaks into the food. Styrene is a neurotoxin and bad for human health. It kills marine and other wildlife,
because it mimics food and causes choking or starvation if ingested. Floating plastic makes up 80% of marine
debris. Needless to say there is nothing positive about Styrofoam and a lot of negatives.
When friends asked me where I planned to live after retirement I just laughed. Where else but here. San Luis
Obispo has always been very progressive. Peoples health and positive lifestyle have been priorities. Our town is
surrounded by lovely open space and exercise and biking are encouraged. We were the first to ban smoking in
public places. This is a beautiful area and our city has always been proactive about our environment. It only follows
that we not allow the city sidewalks, gutters, fields, and streams to be choked with Styrofoam. Styrofoam is just ugly
litter that never goes away.
It has always made me proud to say I lived in San Luis Obispo. Please continue to support our wonderful
lifestyle and green environment by supporting the ban on Polystyrene.
Thank -you for listening,
Laura Tremblay
