Subject: Please vote to endorse AB 1648, the CA DISCLOSE Act
Dear Councilmember Marx,
I firmly believe that AB 1648 is a very good start at cleaning up the misleading messages about ballot
measures. People believe a message when it comes from a sympathetic- sounding ad. However, when
they learn the names of the actual organizations behind the ad, the have a chance to truly understand
why the message is so slanted.
I am counting on you to use all your experience and political skills to support AB 1648, so we can have
real disclosure of political ads in California.
Over $235 million was spent on California ballot measures in 2010 alone, almost all of it by special
interests hiding behind innocuous - sounding names to fool the voters about who really paid for their ads
The Reverend Dr. Rick Schlosser, Executive Director of California Church IMPACT, described the clear
need for AB 1648 when he said 'The overwhelming power of money to mislead voters is a profound moral
issue'
California has the opportunity to take a leading role in cleaning up America's political system by enacting
real disclosure legislation. Please do everything in your power to make sure we take that role.
Sincerely,
Mr. Daniel Bridgman
