Here is a statement I am distributing today which explains why: "I have decided to discontinue my campaign for Mayor of San Luis Obispo. Although it is an honor to serve on City Council, that service comes at great personal and financial cost to my family and me. Continuing to run for mayor and being elected mayor would only add to that cost. I apologize for making this decision so late in the campaign process." Sheryl, I will follow up with respect to my reporting requirements going forward. Needless to say, I won't be returning the nomination papers. Andrew Carter Council Member City of San Luis Obispo From: Carter, Andrew Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2012 11:29 AM To: Lichtig, Katie; Dietrick, Christine Subject: Carter for Mayor, Marx for Mayor In case you're not aware, Jan Marx sent out a press release last night announcing her intent to run for re- election. (See attached.) As a consequence, I've announced my intent as well. I was hoping we could wait on this, but I guess not. Here's my public statement: Jan Marx has announced her intent to run for mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo in the November election. I'm happy to announce that I will be running as well. In this election, voters will have the chance to decide who they want to lead City Hall. Given the difficult economic times, it's a question of financial leadership. Who do voters want to manage the City budget? Who do they trust with the spending of City tax dollars? Based on my proven financial skills, my leadership in getting binding arbitration overturned in the City, and my focus on controlling City costs, particularly pension costs, I believe the voters will choose me for mayor instead of Jan. We'll find out in November.
