To: Jan Marx <janmarx@stanfordalumni.org> San Luis Obispo can lead for the DISCLOSE Act and Integrity in Elections! The city of San Luis Obispo can lead in the fight against unlimited spending unleashed by Citizens United by passing the Integrity in our Elections ordinance from Bill Ostrander's Citizen's Congress and by passing a resolution to support AB 700, the California DISCLOSE Act. The proposed Integrity in our Elections ordinance will require new electronic disclosure rules for outside spending and create a citizen- based Ethics Panel. It will also give every registered San Luis Obispo voter a $20 Democracy Voucher they can donate to any candidate that agrees not to accept private contributions. This will give every voter a real effect on the election while ensuring the wealthy can't influence candidates with large donations. We also need to pass the California DISCLOSE Act so ballot measure ads must clearly and prominently disclose their top three funders without allowing them to purposefully hide behind misleading names. AB 700 will effect both state and local elections, so San Luis Obispo should join other cities that have called for passing this crucial reform. Please ask San Luis Obispo city council members to push forward the Integrity in our Elections ordinance and the California DISCLOSE Act now! Sign the Petition Now! Our petition will automatically email your messages to Mayor Jan Howell Marx, Vice Mayor John Ashbaugh, and Councilmembers Dan Carpenter, Carlyn Christianson, and Dan Rivoire. Here's what it says: The unlimited and often anonymous spending unleashed by Citizens United is having a disastrous effect on our democracy at the national, state, and even local levels. Please do everything you can to help the city of San Luis Obispo take a lead empowering voters by passing the proposed Integrity of Our Elections ordinance for new electronic disclosure rules for outside spending and to create a citizen-based Ethics Panel. The most important part of the proposal is giving every registered San Luis Obispo voter a $20 Democracy Sign the petition for Integrity in Elections for San Luis Obispo! "... Voucher they can donate to any candidate that agrees not to accept private contributions. This will give every voter a real effect on the election while ensuring the wealthy can't influence candidates with large donations. We also need to dramatically improve disclosure on political ads. So please also pass a resolution urging the legislature to pass AB 700, the California DISCLOSE Act (Gomez-Levine), sponsored by the California Clean Money Campaign, so that ballot measure ads have to clearly and prominently disclose their top three funders without allowing them to purposefully hide behind misleading names. AB 700 applies to local ballot measures as well as state ballot measures, so the city of San Luis Obispo should join other cities that have called for passing this crucial reform. Thank you. Sign the Petition Now! Thank you for standing with the California Clean Money Action Fund in our mutual fight for fair elections. Please stay tuned for more ways you can help encourage the SEC to pass this disclosure rule, as well as to pass AB 700 and other crucial bills to fight Big Money in politics. Together, we will create a democracy that is truly of, by, and for the people. Trent Lange President, California Clean Money Action Fund Want to become a Clean Money member? Click here to join.
