Member of the Parks and Recreation Committee,
My name is Rob Davidson. I live on Oceanaire Drive in San Luis Obispo and am a member of Friends of Laguna Lake.
The City is moving forward with the Laguna Lake Natural Reserve Plan and the dredging project it contains. Although it
is not moving as quickly as we had hoped it is on track to begin dredging in 2017. Your committee unanimously
approved this plan.
I am here to ask this committee to begin work to update the Laguna Lake Park so that is better complements the
rejuvenated lake. Specifically in two areas:
1. The Laguna Lake Park Master Plan. I may have missed it, but last time I looked this plan has not
been updated for many years. Please update this plan to add a focus on the infrastructure to support and
encourage water activities on the lake itself.
2. The existing infrastructure. The existing infrastructure to support the lake has suffered from the same
long term neglect as the lake itself. I understand that there are now no plans to do any work on it until
2019. The current dry lake presents a golden opportunity to repair some of this infrastructure at a much
lower cost without the need for the normal permitting restrictions. I have included photographs of some
of the worst items but I want to mention 3 in particular:
a. The Boat Ramp. It is severely undermined and sloping to the side. The future dredging
operation will depend on this ramp for access and it will be very difficult to repair in a wet lake.
b. The 2nd boat dock. I understand the plan is to remove this dock in 2019 as it is being
undermined by the water. The lake needs more access points not less! Supporting the eroded
foundation could be done now fairly quickly and cheaply with a bobcat and a truck load of soil
and rocks
c. The access road. It is eroded at many points and is likely to collapse before 2019. Again,
reinforcing the supporting slope and bank is much easier now.
Can you send a signal that this committee and the City of SLO are planning for a vital lake and park. At the moment it
appears that to goal is to do the least amount of work now.
Laguna Lake can be the jewel of San Luis Obispo, we hope you can work to make the Park the Crown in which it sits.
