AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO
AMENDING THE MUNICIPAL CODE TO PROVIDE FOR
FREE STANDING SIGNS IN THE R -1, R -2, R -3,
R -H AND R -0 ZONES AND TO REVISE CERTAIN SIGN
AREA REQUIREMENTS.
BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of San Luis Obispo
as follows:
SECTION 1. Section 8600.9 of the San Luis Obispo Municipal
Code is hereby amended to.read in full as follows:
"SECTION 8600.9 Signs Permitted in the R -1 (Residential
Low Density), R -2 (Residential Medium
Density), R -3 (Restricted Multiple Family
Residential), R -H (Residential High Density),
and R -0 (Residential- Office) Zones.
A. Name plates shall be permitted subject to the
following conditions:
1. Name plates shall not exceed two (2) square
feet in area.
2. Name plates shall display only the:
a. Name of the premises upon which it is displayed.
b. Name of owner or lessee of said premises.
c. Address of said premises.
d. Nature of home occupation engaged in on
said premises.
3. Name plates shall be affixed flush to the building.
B. High Density Residential, Office and Institutional Signs.
For High Density.Residential, Office and Institutional
uses, including churches, hospitals, rest homes, private
clubs and similar uses, signs shall be permitted subject
to the following regulations:
1. One free standing sign per street frontage. Signs
shall not exceed twenty five (25) square feet in
total aggregate area.

a. The sign may contain only the name and
nature of the occupancy and name of the
institution. All faces of a multifaced
sign shall be counted in determining sign
area.
b. The sign shall not exceed eight (8) feet
in height, said height to be determined as
the distance between the grade of the ad-
jacent street or sidewalk and the top of
sign.
c. The sign shall be located back of the
required yard setbacks, except if lower
than three (3) feet in height.
d. The sign may not be internally illuminated,
but may be flood lighted, provided flood
lights do not cast direct light on adjoining
streets or properties.
2. One sign attached on and parallel - *- to the face of
the building subject to the following conditions:
a. The sign may contain only the name of the
institution, occupant or groups thereof,
and identify services rendered.
b. The sign shall not exceed ten (10) square
feet in area.
c. The sign may not be internally illuminated,
but may be flood lighted, or back lighted.
3. One reader board and /or directory sign subject to
the following conditions:
a. Sign shall not exceed ten(10) square feet in area.
b. The sign may be flood lighted, provided flood
lights do not cast light on adjoining properties.
c. The sign shall only contain information incidental
to services rendered on the premises.
d. The sign shall be located back of the required
yard setback and shall be parallel to the street.

C. One (1) sign directing attention to a new subdivision
subject to the following conditions:
1. The sign shall not exceed one hundred (100) square
feet nor shall it be located less than one hundred
(100) feet from any occupied residence.
2. If a new subdivision is accessible from more than
one (1) major street, a second sign may be erected
in accordance with the above provisions, but not
on the same street.
3. Such signs shall be removed within one (1) year or
upon completion of the subdivision, or cessation
of construction, or upon sale of the last unit,
whichever occurs first."
INTRODUCED AND PASSED TO PRINT by the Council of the City of
San Luis Obispo at a Regular Meeting thereof held on the 17th day
of September, 1973, on motion of Councilman.Brown, seconded by
Councilman Gurnee, and on the following roll call vote:
AYES: Councilmen Brown, Graham, Gurnee, Norris
and Mayor Schwartz
