Subject: Bowling Alley Complex
Dear Mayor Marx and Council Members,
I am bewildered by the Planning Commission's decision to approve a monstrous assemblage of a
bowling alley with a restaurant, several bars, dance club and theater in the heart of downtown,
where Sports Authority used to be. Bowling alleys are usually found on the outskirt of towns,
not in the center, but this is the least of the problems. The bars would welcome customers with
more on their brains than bowling, and the theater would accommodate nearly 400 persons, with
tables and chairs for food and drinks. This means that this part of downtown would permanently
overflow with inebriated, loud, and rowdy people, and make it difficult for long-time residents to
enjoy an evening stroll. It would defeat all the efforts the City Council has been making in order
to develop living quarters downtown and attract home ownership there. As if things were not
bad enough, the developers who came up with this self-serving idea have been accused of lies
and fraud, and recently went through a $1.4 million bankruptcy.
I know it is painful to see so much commercial real estate for lease downtown, but such a
behemoth complex will not alleviate the problem, it will only compound it. Local residents will
stop coming or living downtown, and students and outsiders will party there even more than
now. For your sake and ours, please overturn the hasty decision of the Planning
Commission. Thank you.
