ITEM NO.:_
Dear City Council Members,
I am writing to you out of concern over the new business that is being proposed at 1144 Chorro
Street. While I eagerly await for the property to be used for a business that would serve the needs
of our community, an establishment with 5 bars, 6 drinking lounges and a 393 -person dance club
seems like a step in the wrong direction for the downtown core.
Living in a downtown neighborhood for the past thirty years, the problems associated with late-
night drinking seem to be getting worse. These problems include a significant amount of
neighborhood vandalism and excessive noise, along with a number of other safety-related issues.
The expanding crowds of late-night bar and club patrons are eroding the safe, civil and pleasant
atmosphere which is sought by a majority of our citizenry.
Research shows that our downtown has an over -concentration of bars, compared to other cities in
the state and country. It also has a high alcohol-related crime rate, in particular for aggravated
assault, vandalism and rape. I encourage you to consider these important social and safety factors
before approving any application that increases the number of late-night drinking establishments.
Respectfully yours,
Kurt Friedmann
