Subject: Support of Discovery SLO
Dear SLO City Council Members -
RECEIilED
SEP 10 2015
SLO CITY CLERK R
COUNCIL MEETING: Oc/J
ITEM NO.:_.,_1412-
I would like to express my support of the Discovery SLO project at 1144 Chorro St.
I support this project for two reasons.
1. I am the mother of three children who have the privilege to grow up in our wonderful
city. They range in age from 15 to 8. Not only does this proposal provide appropriate
entertainment options for all them, more importantly, it provides a new destination for the
teenagers growing up in our city. We travel extensively for sports. The main comment
my kids always give us as we travel (both the state and nationally) is that kids in other
places have so many more options for entertainment on weekends. Yes, this sounds petty
but in the larger scheme of things, it is not. Our kids love to head downtown and grab a
burger or walk Farmer's Market but other than that, if they don't have a movie to go to,
there is little for them to do in SLO other than sit around at people's houses, night hikes
(yes, they try to do that) and hang out in parks (unfortunately, yes, they do this too).
These are great kids who are looking for activities. Discovery SLO provides an additional
outlet for fun in our downtown core.
2. While my days of going out downtown are limited given my current role as mother of
three, my husband and I do occasionally like to go downtown. Whether it be to a movie
or for dinner and/or drinks with friends this project provides us with more choices.
Additionally, I fully support the extended hours for food service. There needs to be a
place for people to eat food - not just drink - in the late evening hours. This doesn't
encourage more drinking and rowdy behavior it simply gives people a place to put food
in their belly before they Uber home (hopefully).
I think this project is a wonderful addition to our downtown core. I can already see it as a
highlight in future media coverage of SLO and what we have to offer both residents and tourists
alike.
Thanks,
Stephanie Hicks
