Subject: Appointment to fill vacancy
Dear council members, I know you are all aware of the advantages of filling the vacancy by appointment rather than a
costly election. As you might remember, I was one of the applicants for the position when you made the last
appointment. I heard extensive testimony urging that you appoint the contestant who had won the next highest
number of votes. I repeatedly heard that this was the "right" and democratic thing to do from Mr. Carpenter and his
supporters in the community. Although Mr. Carpenter now calls that an "anomaly" I am hopeful you will recall and act
upon those urgings from Mr. Carpenter and members of the public in the recent appointment process. The council's
Iibility and ability to lead depends in part upon a public perception of fair play and consistency. If Mr. Carpenter's
)ds two years ago were more than self promotion, I hope he will honor the position he took when he sought the
office for himself. An attempt to carve out a special set of rules that governed only his own appointment could be
viewed as opportunism. I know you will carefully consider the merits of the contenders and who shows promise as a
leader. Fortunately there is a worthy candidate who ran a good race as a newcomer to city politics. He was praised by
the Tribune as someone who should try again in the future. I believe that Mr. Aranguena's disposition and passion to
serve would make him an excellent addition to the council. He is less controversial than some of the other applicants
1 would help you to lead the City forward. I thank you all for your dedicated service and for considering my opinion.
