Date_L/s / 23 Item #jLL_,
I am writing this letter with a two -fold purpose. First I am urging you to choose to fill the
vacant City Council position by means of an appointment process. The City simply doesn't have
the funds to spend anywhere from $50- 100,000 for a result that can be achieved by a simple
vote in a City Council meeting.
Secondly, I urge your support of Jeff Aranguena for this position. Jeff ran an excellent campaign
and received nearly 20% of the vote. He received over 1000 votes more than Kevin P Rice, who
is also applying. The people have already spoken and I believe it is your duty to listen to them.
This is the rationale the Council used to appoint Dan Carpenter in 2010 and there is no reason
to discard it in this situation.
Jeff was praised by the Tribune editorial staff during the endorsement process and was also the
recipient of the outstanding young leaders' award, given by the Tribune last week. He is a
gifted teacher who has great success with at -risk students. I know that some of the other
potential applicants have good resumes, too —but there is an important difference: they didn't
run. Jeff put in months of effort, walked the city, raised money, met the people —and
convinced 5775 of them to vote for him. That's more than voted for Dan Carpenter the first
time around and more than Kathy Smith received last time she ran.
Please do the right thing and vote for Jeff Aranguena to fill the vacancy on City Council.
Sincerely,
Patricia Harris
