Dear Mayor Marx and Council Members
Please be aware of the need for city maintenance of the trail system behind Wavertree Street,
connecting Islay Hill Park and the lower end of Spanish Oaks Drive near Sweetbay.
Over the years, I have contacted Dan Carpenter, Robert Hill, Freddy Otte, Neil Havlik and
Jeff Hendricks regarding the need for maintenance of the park trails, playground equipment
and brush clearing. The same reply is given: there are no funds for maintenance at this time.
As a result of lack of city funding, I am applying for the Neighborhood Matching Grant Pilot Program
administered by Rebecca Gershow of Community Development. Now is the time.
Sample letter of support:

Project Name: Islay Hill Creek Restoration and Trail Cleanup, Islay Hill Trail
behind Wavertree Street.
As a residents of the Arbors and Park Terrace Neighborhoods we support the
grant application submitted by Mary Lou Johnson. We agree that a clean up of
dead brush, trees and bushes as well as abandoned water lines will enhance
the appearance, safety and usefulness of this popular walk way connecting
Islay Park to the lower end of Spanish Oaks Drive behind Wavertree Street.
We support an organized neighborhood clean up project with our time and/or
donation of services as defined through Grant Guidelines.
Attached are maps and photos of this popular trail system owned by the city. This is
a wonderful resource in need of restoration for future use and sustainability.
64 homes along Wavertree and Spanish Oaks back up to this trail system. Many neighbors
are very concerned about the fire danger due to build up of dead trees, branches and chaparral.
The creek bed is filled with fallen trees and debri which will case a back up at the rail road
trail. Lets turn this dangerous, blighted area into a safe and sustainable recreational area by
helping neighbors help the city. Support this Grant Application.
Thank you,
Mary Lou Johnson

This needs to be unified under one city department, too close
to homes along creek, never gets maintenance. Should be
maintained under Parks and Recreation.
