Subject: South Broad Street Area Plan

COUNCIL MEETING: .5r
ITEM NO.: kez
I am sending this letter in support of the South Street Area Plan being considered by the City Council this
evening. I am unable to attend because of a prior commitment. I've had the opportunity to be a part of the focus
group that has been working on this plan since its inception. It is a unique and creative approach in an area of
transitional land -use. I believe that in the long term, the approach that is proposed will provide a vibrant mix of
uses and accomplish, at least in part, the desirable goal of creating a "complete neighborhood" where pedestrian
connectivity is encouraged with less reliance on the automobile. This model has worked well in other
communities and could provide a way in which to accommodate growth in an integrated way, reducing or
eliminating the potential for urban sprawl as our community grows.
As you might imagine, over the past several years, there has been lively discussion of how this concept might
be implemented. There is legitimate concern by some property owners regarding their right to continue their
businesses. I believe that City staff can certainly develop assurances that existing business will be protected as
the plan evolves over a period of many years.
I fully endorse the goals and objectives of the South Broad Street Area Plan, and encourage Council and City
staff to continue to work towards the successful implementation of this vision.
Sincerely, .... Charles Crotser
