I've lived in this county for 42 years. I'm here to address the city's use of
dangerous and toxic poison in our city parks to eliminate what some deem to be
unwanted wildlife. I was made aware of the use of this poison at French Park
and, while I was there on Monday for lunch, I noticed children, adults, and various
wildlife in an area with poison used to control the ground squirrels. I verified this
with the city worker, who, after I expressed my concerns, assured me that this
would be discontinued in this park. However, I have concerns about this practice
in other public areas. The sign did not state poison, which I think it should have,
and, in my opinion the area was not made secure enough to ensure that the
poisoned squirrels would not escape and be harmful to other wildlife or domestic
animals.
I have been involved in animal rescue for 26 years working with Pacific Wildlife,
Wood's and currently as a foster home for the feline network, and I have first-
hand knowledge of the dangers of using this type of poison. One example of this,
is that last year, I had a feral mom with 3 two -day old kittens. Mom ate a dead
ground squirrel, passed it on to her nursing kittens and they all died a horrible
death while in my care. My veterinarian verified that the cause of death was the
poison. If we can ban smoking, plastic bags and the use of Styrofoam in our city
because they are toxic to the environment, to humans and to the wildlife, then
we can ban the use of these toxic poisons in our publicly used areas.
