Unleashed dogs may cause stress to small native animals such as squirrels and birds. Unleashed dogs may intimidate other hikers and their dogs, making them feel less safe. Unleashed dogs increase the probability of dogs being banned from your favorite public lands and trails. Failure to leash your dog could result in a fine of about $500. At aproximatly 10.30 am I was walking my dog like I do almost every day. I entered the right field gate and the matinance worker was just inside the gate talking to two people. He gave me a hard time about my dogs not on their leash. I expressed my view that people use this field to let their dog run all the time and showed him that I had bags to pick up any poops. As I was walking away he mentioned there was a dead gofer out in the field so I kept my dogs away from it. We walked thru the field but didn't stay because of the gofer. We finished our walk around the area and went home. At approximitly 2:001 came in to the house after being outside and found Pebbles stagering W and gaging. I rushed her to my vet and they said she was poisoned. I left her there and came back home to double check my other dog. On my way back to the vet I pulled over a city worker named Dennis. 1 asked what they were using to get rid of the gofers and he told me Strychine. He said the other worker (Ken) was using water to flush the dead gofer out. I was shocked. I went back to the vets office but they were closing so I had to take Pebbles to Pet ER in Arroyo Grande. I moved quick so by midnight she was doing ok and she came home. The next day I went to Sinsheimer and found Dennis. I asked for Ken but he said I don't want to talk to him and refered me to Todd Bates. I went to the Prado road office and tried to talk to him about this but he came off defensive and unhelpful. He stated they don't use Strychine, they use a product you can buy in any hardwhare store called Gofer Getter. The conservation started to become heated so I left. I checked gofer geter and the first ingredient is Strychine. I went to City hall and flied a complaint with Emely in the front office and she asured me someone would call me on this matter. Its now Monday night and no call. I have discussed this with my neighbors and we are all aupaled the city is using this poison in a place where children and dogs play. I am scared to take my dogs to any park now and would like a list of places where this practice is preformed. I understand you have to do about the gofers but poison is not the way. My son works at Cass Winery and they use traps and catch them all the time. All Ken had to do is tell me to stay out, but he didn't even mention the poison danger from flushing. Ether block off area being flushed or don't use poison. I deserve to be reimbursed for my vet bills of 328.90 at least. I await your response. Always keep a collar or harness on-your dog for a quick hook -up. 2. Train your dog to come back to you and be leashed. 3. Use open space only when not in use by an organized event. 4. Stay away from people who are afraid of dogs. S. Always pick up after your dog and replace your devit. 6. Violators can loose off- leash permit and /or be fined. February 2, 2016 Good evening; my name is William Derringer. I live at 1255 Orcutt Rd. # A -7, I graduated SLO High in 1976 and have lived and worked here for forty years as an automotive technician. I am now retired and the highlight of my day is being able to take my dogs out for a short walk in the afternoon. They are two of the most lovable dogs you'll ever meet and they love to run off - leash in the open grass areas. Sometimes other dogs from the neighborhood come by and they play together. We all know each other and each others dogs. We are all responsible dog owners. We pick up our poop, control our dogs and only let our dogs off -leash when it is safe. Dogs need to run free. They are more happy and healthy when they are allowed to exercise. Recently I have learned the city has hired three new rangers to enforce the new open space policy. One of those policies is to ticket residents who let their dog run off - leash. When I heard what the fine was I was in disbelief. I tried to go to Laguna lake dog park but the area is just a field. Also, it took me 30 minutes to get there because of traffic on Madonna road. A dog park needs to have a maintained lawn, not an open field with gofer holes that can break a leg and rocks that hurt the pads on the dogs feet. (See page 1 of photo packet) I believe all dogs should be able to run off - leash. Unfortunately, some people are not responsible and don't train their dogs and tragedy can happen. My dog pebbles has been attacked twice. Aggressive dogs should be on a leash and city parks is not their place to run. Most people that I have met in our parks are older folks and have tame, loveable dogs. Even people with aggressive dogs will let you know before they pass. The residents need a place close to home to let their dogs run and play off - leash. I am not suggesting we spend a bunch of money building dog parks, just to find a way to share the open space we already have. Page 2 of photo packet is a card I picked up at the parks & rec office. Reasons to leash your dog. Notice the acorn. I have made some comments. Page 3 are photos of a tree at French park where city maintenance has bated it with Diphenadione to kill the squirrels. The squirrels die an agonizing death and roll out from under the tree where they can be picked up by anything that happens by, on leash or not. An explanation of the poison is included. I have been thru this before in May of 2012 when Pebbles was poisoned at Stockton field. (see page 4, letter to mayor). I would like to propose a solution. First of all, put an immediate stop on using any type of poison in our parks now or in the future. Use eco friendly traps if you have to. As for off -leash dogs an idea would be to have animal services sell a bright orange off -leash tag for say 60.00 per year. It can be an option on the yearly tag fees. Or; Take your dogs to animal services and have them checked for aggression and have them issue your tag. Provide a flyer with a list of off -leash guidelines and reasonable fines for offenders. Page 5 is an example of off -leash guidelines for inner city parks. Until we have a more fair policy I request you instruct your rangers to discontinue the current policy of ticketing until a better plan is in place.
