Meeting: Me
Item: __L
I just returned from a visit with my sister who lives in Bellingham, WA. While walking through one of the
many parks in Bellingham, my sister stated rather proudly, "You may be known as the happiest town in the US
but Bellingham has the distinction of having the most parks per capita." My sad reply was that San Luis has the
most bars per capita ---we are not happy, we are drunk.
Adding 41 units around the existing Sanford home will not preserve the historical integrity of this house and
surrounding 1.3 acres. This is a neighborhood without a park. This home and the surrounding land would make
an incredible park for the entire city to enjoy. The non -historical additions could be removed, the historical
home renovated, and the grounds landscaped. It could be a city park and venue for special events.
Many of our established neighborhoods are being destroyed by the taking over and build up of much needed
student housing. It is too late for my neighborhood of Monterey Heights but please don't allow another
established neighborhood to fall, in order to provide more university housing.
Please suggest to the City that since Measures Y and G were pedaled to us as a way to provide more parks and
green space, this would be an excellent way for them to show that the city really meant what they said.
Please look to Bellingham, Washington with its Roeder Home, recognized on the prestigious National Register
of Historic Places. This home, built in 1909, became a county park in 1971. I was privileged to attend my
sister's wedding held at this venue in 1986.
You are the only working group within San Luis that looks out for the cultural health rather than the economic
health of this city. Please, strongly oppose the proposed high density housing project and preserve a miniscule
piece of our history and culture.
Sincerely,
Linda White
