Subject: Luneta Drive
Dear SLO City Planning Staff and Council Members,
After hearing what is planned for Luneta Drive, I felt the need to express my opinion on the matter
I am a resident of this neighborhood, having lived on Serrano Drive for the past 17 years. There have been
many issues over the years concerning traffic on Serrano. The thought of even more cars on this street is a
frightening one. It is steep, narrow and populated with cyclists heading to and from the mountain. Vehicles
often speed up the hill and careen around the corner to Palomar or race down the hill towards Broad St. with
little regard to speed limits.
Luneta is closed for a reason. If people have the means to drive through to Palomar from Luneta, I am afraid we
will see more speeders on Serrano and Palomar than we already do. Luneta has a large apartment complex
along the north side of the street. With the planned construction of the new apartment complex at 71 Palomar
(which I'm sincerely hoping won't get built), Palomar and Serrano will be simply inundated with traffic as all
those cars would now use these streets to get downtown.
If the idea behind this plan is to ease traffic on Ramona, it will only do so at the expense of Luneta, which will
now become another congested roadway with cars barrelling through to get to Broad. It seems to me a better
idea would be adding traffic -calming enhancements to Ramona, which would at least encourage those drivers
currently using Ramona as a route to Broad St. to stay on Foothill, which can handle the capacity. That way, the
traffic on Palomar and Serrano would be reduced as well and Luneta can remain as it is.
I urge the SLO City Planning Staff and Council Members to consider the wisdom of these plans and to preserve
the safety and sanctity of Luneta St.
Many thanks for taking the time to read my email!
