I have lived in this county for almost 40 years, and am very familiar with properties through out the City and County that have, over the years, had work done on residences without the required permits, for one reason or another. In some cases, the property was constructed before permits were required. I know of several cases like this -the 100 year old house appears on the tax rolls, but no permit history is available. For any City, but especially friendly San Luis Obispo, to treat the Walkers in the manner that they have been handled, is ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason for the treatment they have received. It seems to be, from what I have read, both in their blog, and the Tribune article, to be arbitrary, and capricious, as well as just plain mean and cruel. They may lose their home, which they purchased in good faith. And if they are allowed to keep it, they will have paid a hellacious price, in money as well as mental anguish. Let's face it -under the new Ordinance, many issues dealing with permits and other items are going to come up; after all, that is what it is designed, in part, to do. If every person whose property will be inspected under the Ordinance is treated in the disrespectful manner the Walkers are being treated, the City Council will be over whelmed answering appeals. I hope that you folks will take a preemptive position, and suspend the enforcement of the Ordinance until it can be more throughly reviewed in light of some of the problems with the way it is being enforced can be looked at. Currently it looks like the Nuremberg laws that Hitler passed to repress the Jews, laws that were designed to single out a specific group, and punish them. There is no reason why anyone should fear losing their home because of the way this law is being enforced. I will be at the April 5th meeting to lend my support to their appeal.
