Subject: VOTE NO ON "THE ROCK"
Dear San Luis Obispo City Council,
On tonight's agenda will be discussion on wether to allow the new SLO Brew facility on Buckley Road to also operate a
night club on the premises, to be known as "The Rock".
I am against allowing the facility to be operated as a night time venue for many reasons.
The first is traffic. Having the brewery and daytime tasting operations is going to increase what is already a daily
nightmare on Buckley and through to 227. 1 believe one of the co-owners of SLO Brew also owns Shopatron next door.
That company's major remodel and renovation of the old Strasbaugh warehouse into offices for its employees a few
years ago has added enormous strain on the surrounding roadways. SLO Brew will add to that. There already have been
many accidents on the curve near the property, including deaths. The roadways are not lit at night. Having a night club in
that location, with people driving late at night after a few drinks with inadequate lighting is a recipe for disaster.
The second reason is sound. Sound travels far out here! The valleys and prevailing wind patterns create a perfect
conduit for sounds from the airport area. As I write this email I am hearing a plane landing at the airport a mile away.
It's not bothersome as a short burst at 7:30 in the morning, but it would be unbearable at 11:00 at night with the
consent pounding of the bass beat. All of the people who moved out to this neighborhood did so because we wanted a
more quiet and rural living environment. We don't want to be hearing the sounds of a C -level or has-been band (based
on what SLO Brew used to book downtown) and screaming people when we are trying to enjoy a quiet evening at home
on a Saturday night. If we wanted to listen to concerts and 600 people from our backyards, we would have moved closer
to town.
The final reason I am against approval of The Rock is because I just don't trust the owners of the facility to abide by
whatever constraints are given to them as a condition of approval. We've all seen where a facility is only allowed to offer
an event a certain amount of times per month slowly expand to more days per month or longer hours of operation.
Once the activity is allowed, the restrictions always slacken over time. And the homeowners in the area will have no
way to do anything about it. One of the owners in the paper said that even though the facility can handle 600 people,
they only expect 200 at the concerts. I sure hope he hasn't told his investors that because that is horrible business. Of
course when you build for 600 you are expecting 600 or you wouldn't put out the extra finances to do so. If the owners
can't even be straight with us now, we can't expect them to abide by their restrictions in the future.
Please vote NO on The Rock.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
