statements made or questions raised, or to ask staff to follow up on such issues.

PUBLIC COMMENT
Katchey Andrews, Jack family member, noted Howard Jack never owned the Jack House. Katchey
stated, Howard Jack had a life estate. A life estate allows a surviving family member to live in the
home for their life time then the home will be passed on according to the trust.

absent from the previous Committee Meeting

Page C i 1 Member Papp asked for motion to be from display all works on paper that are
consider in danger and authorize the expenditure of $200 to seek a proposal from Gail Johnson
to assess the works on paper, with the exception of the Books, and use her assessment to guide
the planning for the preservation of the collection

2.CONSIDERATION OF FINANCIAL REPORT (SETTLE)
MOTION: (Updegrove/Kincaid) Approve Financial Report for March 2016.

3.Consideration of Draft Jack House Marketing Plan (Setterlund)
Committee Comments:
Chair Member Settle asked to discuss marketing plan at May Committee meeting and make final
vote on plan in the June meeting.
Committee member Ulz would like docents and or committee members to create a summary of
activities for the year’s events.
4.Staff Report For Parks and Recreation (Setterlund)
The completion of the Jack House Elevator Removal and ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled
for Tuesday, May 10, at 3PM
The Bridal Sweet has been update with fresh paint and new furniture
The Capital improvement project for the Laguna Lake Golf Course Bathrooms is nearing
completion
Registration for has started JR Giants
April 23, is the kick off day to register for the SLO Triathlon and Parks and Recreation is
excepting volunteers for the event currently.
Youth Services early bird registration for Fall programing is happening now and is the first time
the Youth Services has allowed registration for Fall programing this early.
Youth Service summer camp registration is currently underway.
Monster Skate a seven City event is currently happening and the final stop will be at the San Luis
Obispo Skate Park on Saturday, May 21.
5.Jack House Docent Activities (PAPP)
Exofficio Committee member James Papp invited Committee Members to join the docents to
unpack and place artifacts back in the Jack House.

6.Friends of the Jack House Updates (Papp)
Member Papp reached out to present guest to consider becoming potential Jack House Docents.

7.SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS (SETTLE)
a.Strategic Planning (Crotser, Settle, Ulz)
To no avail Member Ulz has reached out to Leslie Santos-Dierks with SPOKES to give
Leslie information about Jack House Stake Holders so she can prepare material
regarding the Jack House retreat.
Member Croster will reach out to Leslie Santos-Dierks in place of while Eva is out of
town.
b.Carriage House Accessibility (Crotser, Papp)
Member Croster stated Pacific Builder has not given an estimate yet
c.Collections, Use & Handling Policy (Settle, Ulz, Darnell)
Chair Settle, the committee developed a list of questions for the June retreat.
Questions:
1.What is the mission of the Jack House?
2.Clarify authority over the Jack House and its collections – who sets policy regarding
the collections? Who manages day-to-day decisions based on those policies? Who
should collections questions and/or differences of opinion be directed to?
3.What is the interpretive period/goal(s) of the Jack House?
4.Is the collection meant to be preserved or used? Are there sections of the collection
that should be treated in different ways?
5.What are responsibilities concerning inventory? What collections Software should
we use?
6.We’d like to create a brief questionnaire to compile a modern history of the Jack
House collections and how they have been cared for and developed over the past
thirty (30) years.
8.MEMBER COMMENTS/ COMMUNICATIONS/REPORTS (ALL)
Vice Chair Toni noted that the Victorian games needs to go through committee as well as cost of
tours
Member Eva believes the committee would be wise to establish a protocol for establishing event at
Jack House.
Member Papp discussed potential new location of pier table.
Member Ulz noted that Frank Vagnone advocates for untraditional uses of historic homes and is
interested in programing at the Jack House.

Chair Settle mentioned Joe Sable is hosting Black Walnut tree grafting party Saturday, April 23, at 4
PM. Member Settle mentioned that the Ketetzel House across the street from the Jack House is for
sale
Member Papp believes the Jack House committee should engage Gail Johnson about paper for
Ketezel home before the property is sold.

Opening
Our
regular
Sunday
season
opening
will
take
place
this
week,
April
17,
two
weeks
earlier
than
usual
due
to
an
early
Easter
and
no
conflict
with
the
United
Way.
On
display
will
be
our
dozens
of
recently
assembled
portraits
of
the
Jack
House
and,
of
course,
our
newly
restored
dining
room
bay
and
master
bedroom
window.
Object
Replacement
On
April
12
Facilities
Maintenance
staff
moved
large
furniture
back
to
its
original
locations.
Docents
still
need
assistance
to
replace
most
of
the
over
four
hundred
small
objects
before
opening.

Numbers:

and
Group
Tours
April

Art
after
Dark
and
a
visit
from
seventeen
Point
San
Luis
Lighthouse
docents
has
brought
attendance
this
year
to
over
250.
The
lighthouse
has
offered
an
exclusive
tour
for
our
docents
in
return.
Upcoming
group
tours
include
Mission
Prep
fourth-‐graders,
retired
teachers,
and
the
Questers.
Mother’s
Day
The
Mother’s
Day
exhibition
will
be
“The
Art
We
Eat
On:
Five
Centuries
of
Tableware,”
and
will
run
through
May,
with
its
final
showing
Art
after
Dark
on
June
3.
Because
of
a
wedding,
there
will
be
no
May
Art
after
Dark.
Works
on
Paper
Docent
president
James
Papp
met
with
Gail
Johnson
and
went
with
her
through
the
collection
of
framed
works
on
paper,
identifying
items
damaged
or
at
risk;
causes
ranging
from
acidic
mats
and
wood
housing
to
moisture
and
light
exposure;
and
strategies
for
conservation
and
restoration.
Creation
of
a
priority
list
for
archival
rehousing
and
other
treatments
based
on
level
of
damage
or
risk
would
move
the
process
forward.
The
committee
may
wish
to
direct
the
creation
of
such
a
list
and
consider
sources
of
funding
for
the
work.
Docent
Handbook
Updating
The
work
on
the
handbook
continues,
and
in
the
interim
a
summary
of
recent
information
on
the
house
and
its
contents
has
been
distributed
to
docents.
Folding
Chairs
Docents
would
like
wooden
folding
chairs
to
replace
the
plastic
ones
currently
borrowed
from
the
wedding
supply,
so
docents
can
sit
down
between
tours
and
elderly
visitors
sit
down
during
tours.
The
History
Network
Docents
Marilyn
Darnell,
James
Papp,
and
Eva
Ulz
represented
the
Jack
House
at
the
county
History
Network’s
quarterly
mixer
for
spring,
which
included
a
two-‐hour
tour
of
Hearst
Castle
conducted
by
its
director,
Mary
Levkoff,
and
a
reception
and
member
presentations
at
the
Cambria
Historical
Society.
The
Jack
House
hopes
to
co-‐host
the
summer
mixer.

will
be
giving
two
presentations
at
the
California
Preservation
Foundation
conference
next
week
in
San
Francisco:
one
with
the
California
State
Office
of
Historic
Preservation
(OHP)
on
California
Environmental
Quality
Act
(CEQA)
exemptions
and
paragraph
13000.2.f
exceptions
to
exemptions,
with
the
proposed
San
Luis
Square
development
next
to
the
Jack
House
as
a
case
study,
and
the
other
“Shaft,”
the
story
of
the
Jack
House’s
elevator
shaft
removal,
for
“Three-‐Minute
Success
Stories,”
a
session
focusing
on
historic
preservation
and
Secretary
of
the
Interior
guidelines.

Art
after
Dark
featured
two
exhibitions:
The
Library
of
a
Ranching
Family,
with
Jack
family
books
on
loan
from
Cal
Poly
Special
Collections,
curated
by
Laura
Sorvetti,
and
April
Fools:
Caricatures
and
Grotesques
from
the
Nineteenth
and
Twentieth
Centuries,
curated
by
James
Papp.
Attendance
was
down,
possibly
as
a
result
of
being
unable
to
open
the
house
and
soft
attendance
throughout
the
city.
The
Friends
continues
to
experiment
with
offerings
and
PR
to
gain
maximum
attendance
and
maximum
engagement.
A
selection
of
eight
photographs
from
the
Richard
Field
Levine
exhibition
were
installed
last
week
on
the
ground
floor
of
the
County
Offices
near
the
Supervisors’
Chamber
as
a
teaser
for
the
upcoming
exhibition
in
the
Wash
House.
Thanks
go
to
Debbie
Arnold
and
her
legislative
assistant
Jen
Caffee
for
working
with
the
Jack
House
on
this
project,
which
has
the
potential
to
open
up
these
previously
unoccupied
walls
to
history
organization
use.
County
staff
member
John
Blankenship
did
the
installation.
The
Friends
of
the
Jack
House
board
met
in
March
and
welcomed
City
Councilman
John
Ashbaugh
for
part
of
its
meeting.
The
Friends
approved
a
Web
site
architecture
undertook
to
support
projects
to
provide
•interpretive
signage
in
the
Jack
Garden
to
engage
and
educate
visitors
when
the
Jack
House
is
not
open
and
to
draw
additional
visitors.
•enough
wooden
folding
chairs
for
events
in
the
house,
ideally
through
a
sponsorship
drive
and
naming
plaques.
The
Historic
Sports
program
in
June,
July,
and
August
will
be
split
between
the
grounds
of
the
Jack
House
(on
odd-‐date
Sundays)
and
Dallidet
(on
even-‐date
Sundays)
in
order
to
take
advantage
of
cross-‐promotion.
The
Friends
of
the
Jack
House
has
a
$2,000
contribution
requested
for
elevator
shaft
removal.
A
further
$250
of
donations
will
trigger
a
$500
matching
grant
by
Libby
Agran
to
achieve
that
goal.
